They were entertaining offers in the off season, so obviously they don't view him as untouchable. They were seeking a bat in return, which they'd get in Soriano.

 

I'd do the originally proposed trade without Hill. I'd think about including Hill if they paid all of both Soriano's and Zito's salary, which is highly doubtful.

You're clearly missing the point. Of course they wouldn't do it for Lincecum alone. Zito has tremendous negative value at this point.
