Relievers aren't really good pitchers. They tend to be inconsistent and unreliable. The more of them you use in any given game, the more likely you are to get a horrible performance out of one of them. When you have to take out your bad starting pitcher early after surrendering a run an inning, perhaps you should consider putting your long relievers in early and let them go, you know, long. Or better yet, start them.

I agree. Lou is really screwing the pooch early on. He's really mismanged the entire pitching staff.

I'm fed up with Lou's handling of middle relief.

Step 1)

Take a good, young lefty starter and bump him from the rotation for a longtime buddy of yours with little competition. Then, instead of using him in long relief, make him a loogy.

Step 2)

Use your mop-up guy, the worst on the team, in a one-run game. Essentially prove that the concept of leverage is completely beyond you.

Step 3)

Keep cycling through relievers in a bad inning instead of letting a guy get settled in.

Step 4)

Moan about how bad your middle relief is.

They can be. The problem is, when middle relievers get good enough, they become set up men and closers, creating the need for more garbage to fill the middle relief spots.

Well he better start getting it together because this losing crap is starting to piss me off.

Yeah. All this losing that has lead us to being six games over .500.

Damn all this losing. :D

I don't see the bullpen as the issue in this situation. I see the issue being our starter's have not been able pitch 6 - 7 innings of solid baseball each time out. I think Lieber would at least give us 6-7 innings each time out.

Dempster avg 6.2 IP per start (if last years closer is leading your team in IP per start; I think starting pitching "may" be a problem)

Zambrano avg 6 IP per start

Marquis avg 5 2/3 IP per start

Lilly avg 5 IP per start

Hill avg 4 2/3 IP per start

Starters 149 2/3 IP

Bullpen 91 2/3 IP

I think if we could get the IP Per start up with each starter the pen would work itself.

I just can't help but think Lieber should be in the rotation. I'm 100% he is a better starter then Marquis and at this point Lilly and Hill if you go from this season only. Also if you moved Dempster (I'm afraid to say it), but it may make the pen a little stronger it also "may" satisfy the ones that say our bullpen needs some help - lou. However I also see the argument that I can't argue for more innings pitched by our starters and then say lets move our #1 IP per start starter back into the pen.

It's highly unlikely Lieber would last most of the season without ending up on the DL if you try and stretch him out as a starter, and then you have him able to do nothing.

The best bet for bumping up the starters is to either work in someone in-house like Marshall or Gallagher to replace Marquis or trading for someone to replace Marquis. Lilly already seems to be working out of his craptacular start and there's little reason to assume Hill won't do the same...and in the worst case scenario that he can't, again, Marshall or Gallagher. Marquis is the only one right now they should be looking to replace in the starting rotation ASAP.

Woulda been cool if the Cubs could have come up with a deal with the Twins to keep Tim Lahey and his 1.13 K/IP and 2.2 GO to AO in the minors.
