At the post game press conf. Lou was upset at his mid inn guys and said it's been a chronic problem for a while. Since everyone's middle relief sucks and nobody willing to trade any relief pitching now, any ideas who could come up or be shuffled around. It's obvious Hart and Wuertz were who he was refering to. Hart has potential and Wuertz has become the Lou's new doghouse occupant with his wildness. Edited by Dallas Green

I'm guessing Gallagher will replace Hart soon enough. Meh.

Better bring him into bases loaded situations. Lou's handling of the bullpen tonight was awful and he has to take his share of the blame. I was only following the game on gameday, but it seemed clear that Hart didn't have it tonight, but he was trotted out for a second inning. Marshall apparently can only face lefties even though he was a successful starter. Wuertz was brought in with the bases loaded and 1 out even though he's been struggling with control. Lou Yost'ed this one.

True, but Wuertz has been terrible. I thought he was going to be the sleeper of the pen this year. We should've maybe sold high to Detroit?

Ascanio and Ohman for Marshall and Hart

Cotts? Piggy?

ETA: Ascanio should be in the bigs though.

Lou's being stupid. What does he expect? Everybody to be Joba Chamberlain? Look at where we are in the season. At the end of the season, is Seattle's pen going to have a 5.43 ERA and Tampa's a 2.26 ERA? Florida's a 2.81? We just jerk players around too much here.

Look at the numbers for Pat Neshek, Francisco Rodriguez, Huston Street, Matt Guerrier, Cla Meredith, George Sherrill, Tony Pena (a good reliever from AZ), Aaron Heilman, Jason Isringhausen, Joaquin Benoit, Manny Corpas, Damaso Marte, Jeremy Accardo, and J. J. Putz, saints preserve us, the Relief Pitching All Star Team is in the crapper, good thing we don't have them or they'd all be sent down.

I would have to say that the "Gallagher" to the bullpen issue is dead. I think the Cubs learned their lesson last year that Sean isn't a pitcher for the bullpen. Thats not to say it couldn't happen as Sean would do whatever he was asked to help the club. I just don't see the bullpen as a good fit. I would have to say that Ascanio would be the first RH to be called up.

I'm glad Lou's fed up. He should be; with a solid pen, we win last night.

Yeah. Can't blame Marquis. He pitched 5 innings of 10 hit, 9.00 ERA ball. What more can you expect from your starters?

Middle relievers are there b/c they aren't good or durable enough to be starters and aren't good enough to be closers/stoppers (whatever you want to call the Marmols and Chamberlains of the world). We continually have to go to the pen for 3-4 IP. That means a lot of work for guys that, almost by definition, aren't very good. You're going to get burned when you do that repeatedly. It'd be nice if we could routinely get 6 and 7 IP from our starters (we had a nice little string there last week - 5 games in a row or something?), but all too frequently, our starters aren't getting the job done.

I'd rather see Gallagher or Marshall replace Marquis in the rotation.

limiting Marshall to loogy duty is one of the dumbest things Lou has done since he's been in Chicago. i understand he's frustrated, but he's contributing to this.

The fact is, middle relief is a big problem for pretty much every team. Thats why a good middle reliever is so hard to come buy, and solid production from the likes of Howry, Wuertz, and Eyre when he comes back is so important to this team. We may have the best set man-closer combo in the NL right now, but if we cant get the ball to them when it counts, it really doesnt matter.

I say we work out a trade for Mike MacDougal with the White Sox. Hes never been in the NL before, and hes in AAA, so he should be obtainable.

and if the offense gave us 4 more runs, we win last night. and if Marquis didn't give up 5 runs, we win last night. and if I wasn't so lazy, I wouldn't be chubby in the middle

Keep Wuertz around. He's always been a slow starter. If you're going to weather a historically slow starter at the major league level to begin the year, you don't send him down before the time when he starts heating up.
