From RealGM:

San Diego Union-Tribune - The Cubs are reportedly watching Padres shortstop Khalil Greene, and the Padres have monitored Cubs center fielder Felix Pie, who lost playing time to Reed Johnson, as the two teams may make a trade.

Exact passage in the Union-Tribune article:

Even if Edmonds heats up, the Padres' need for a younger center fielder remains. That's a market the Padres have explored since last May, when they and the Cubs – frequent trade partners in recent years – considered various scenarios. The Cubs have kept tabs on Padres shortstop Khalil Greene, and the Padres have monitored Cubs center fielder Felix Pie, who lost playing time to Reed Johnson.

Reed is Gary Gietti (sp) and the Cubs are going to make a possible long term commitment to him.

I think Pie would do well hitting in SD with that big park. He may lead the league in triples for years.

I'm guessing the Pads would want a SS back along with Pie? Not that we would need Greene, Theriot, and Cedeno. Edited by cubfan

I'd guess Cedeno unless they don't know what they're doing, Theriot.

I'd hate like hell to give up Ronny.

Two best everyday prospects (I don't think of Soto as one cause he's doing fine) yeah, it'll hurt.

I wouldn't do Pie and Cedeno for Green, they'd have to throw in another prospect. Theriot and Pie? Oh yeah.

I'd love to know who the Cubs think is the better SS for the future, Cedeno or Theriot. What worries me is if the Cubs think Theriot is a true 2 hitter and deal Ronny.

I'd hate to give up Cedeno too, but I guess he really dosen't have a place if Greene is on the team. Before the season started I would have jumped at the prospect of getting Greene for Pie+Cedeno but I'm not sure now. Cedeno may never be better than Greene, but I'm starting to think that he might be close enough that I wouldn't want to lose Pie for the difference.

I wonder if they would throw in Murton as well? Do any of you think this has anything to do with the thread that says Lou is not happy with Pie and this writer is speculating form that?

I can't dispute that Greene would be an upgrade, but after watching Ronny mature, I'm not so sure a Pie & Cedeno for Greene would be good for us... I'd rather stand pat & use Pie for acquiring a #2 SP than trade for a MIF right now. Then again, since a lot of us are so reactionary, a bad week by Ronny makes the previous statement null & void. :)

He'd be a decent backup SS/2B and if DeRosa goes into an offensive slide he could fill in ok enough bat wise and be an upgrade defensively. Yeah, Pie and Cedeno going would sting but I'm not sure what the Pads have in the minor SS wise, maybe they have a guy ready to come up?

They don't, so it's all but assured Cedeno or Theriot would be included, with the former bing much more likely.

The new Brian Roberts thread starts NOW. I'm betting this one makes it to 200 pages by the end of May.

Can Khalil get his offense going at all? Offensively he's not all that good besides the occasional HR

Look at his home/away splits:

Get him away from those cavernous ballparks in the NL west and he tends to rake.

You mean like those cavernous places where offense goes to die like Arizona and Coors? The splits would be more informative if the OPS+ number was adjusted for the league, not the team also.

Wow...and I would be there right from the beginning!

Imagine if the Cubs went out and got Greene AND Roberts?

The split is obviously hinged more on Petco than anywhere else. It's a pretty startling difference, especially in regard to his power numbers. It's not a stretch at all to think that his home numbers would drastically improve hitting in a place like Wrigley as his home park instead of Petco.
