Carlos Marmol or Joba Chamberlain?

The homerism in me, and my anti-Yankees disdain would obviously make me pick Carlos Marmol. But since his been called up, Joba has been as good as Marmol, in perhaps a tougher division and league. I prolly still go Marmol, because hs secondary pitch (The Slider) is prolly better then Joba's secondary pitches. But dang, that would be hard to chose from.

Chamberlain is better than Marmol.

IF he is its' only by the smallest of margins.

Its bigger than the smallest of margins.

Looks like Hank changed his mind. I guess that makes him an idiot.

But really, do you want to ruin a talented young pitcher by giving him that much of an increased workload? Was he a starter on the farm? Aren't all relievers failed starters?

He started most of last year until it was obvious that the Yankees needed him in the bullpen down the stretch at which point they moved him into that role at AAA.

Johan Santana was a reliever for the Twins quite a bit.

The whole point of keeping him as a reliever for the first half and then moving him into the rotation in the second was to keep his IP at roughly 30 more innings than he threw last season (~115). So he pitches 30 innings as a reliever in the first half, 100 as a starter in the second and the rest is for the playoffs.

And now Joba is 'officially' transitioning to the rotation.

MLB.com[/url]"]

The process for Joba Chamberlain's transition to the rotation officially began on Wednesday, but the seeds were actually planted eight months ago, two decks above the playing field at Yankee Stadium.

The major concern of Chamberlain's development were his innings, having thrown just 88 1/3 Minor League innings last season before tossing an additional 27 2/3 -- including playoffs -- in the big leagues.

"Our plan all along has been to make him a starter," Girardi said. "There were some limitations on innings, because really he's pitched one year of professional baseball. You can't jump guys up too quickly, because it can lead to injury or it can lead to a second year where they struggle. It's what we've talked about all along internally."

did i read this right?

Marmol is the best reliever in baseball. Nate McLouth is the only player who has any clue how to hit him (4 RBI of his 5 ER).

Chamberlain is better than Marmol.

Stats as reliever:

Marmol: 107.2 innings pitched, 150 K, 46 BB, 1.92 ERA, 1.012 WHIP, .514 OPS against

Chamberlain: 44.1 innings pitched, 59 K, 15 BB, 1.42 ERA, .925 WHIP, .504 OPS against

It's too close to call. However, Marmol is having a better season so far.

Joba's brief minor league record is just as otherworldly as his numbers as a relief pitcher, while Marmol was merely "pretty great" as a minor league starter. However, if you look at how Marmol finished his minor league years as a starter(2006-2007), it's closer.

Joba (40 IP at A+, 40.1 at AA, 8 at AAA)

88.1 IP, 1.01 WHIP, 13.76 K/9, 2.75 BB/9, 5.00 K/BB, 0.41 HR/9

Marmol(58 IP at AA, 44 at AAA)

112 IP, 1.01 WHIP, 9.32 K/9, 3.05 BB/9, 3.05 K/BB, 0.40 HR/9

The strikeout and walk numbers are better for Joba, but on the other hand half of those innings were against High A competition, so it's probably closer to a wash than it appears.

So does this mean that Farnsworth is now the setup man to Rivera #-o

It'll be funny to see what Hank Steinbrenner says when Farnsworth blows every other close game that the Yankees lead in the 8th.
