Calf strain. Lou said postgame that Soriano is getting an MRI tonight and that "it could be a while," but also said later that "it could be a few days." So we know that Soriano will be out anywhere from a few days to the rest of the season. We'll know more tomorrow.

first of all, how does a professional athlete strain his calf by hopping 4 inches into the air?? pretty sure im not in good shape yet play pickup basketball without managing to strain anything. maybe thats not a fair comparison, but seriously...

but the good news is that the cubs arent really starving for offense at the moment w/ dlee having a red hot bat, fukudome being consistent, aram heating up, derosa being a silent mvp like last yr, and even theriot hitting ok as of late. thank god we dont have to watch jacques and floyd anymore. hopefully hes only out for 2-3 weeks though.

also, this could mean that the big murt could get the call and give this team an even higher dose of OBP and quality at bats.

another interesting point, and i hate to even bring it up, (but it could be an excuse to), is depending on the severity of the injury, could this cause hendry to up his offer on the brian roberts front? perhaps coco crisp? just share your thoughts...

at least Soriano takes his job seriously enough to not play cute in the outfield on routine fly balls

It's not like he was doing kartwheels out there. It was a pretty innocent little bunny hop which he's probably been doing since the first day he was playing in the outfield. If he strained his calf on something like that it was bound to happen sooner or later.

What is more concerning isn't his bunny hops in the outfield but how is legs may be starting to break down (see hamstring last year) and what this means for this season and the 6 after.

This contract wasn't Zito dumb but it was awfully stupid.

For the time being. He's not gonna shake it unless he gets consistent starts aainst all righties the Cubs face.

Agreed. The guy for the most part has been healthy throughout his career, he signs a ridiculous contract and he's already breaking down. I hate that he's here.

Yep. He is so overmatched at the plate it's comical at times.

The question now is do you keep him with the big league team and give him a start every 10 games or so and let him be a late inning defensive replacement or send him down and let him work on shortening his swing?

I know, I know...he crushes AAA pitching and has nothing more to prove. Clearly he does have more to prove because nothing he did down there is translating here and now.

i know he's been bad. but can you really give up on him 2 weeks into the season? if he's struggling like this in june, then i'd look for some other solutions.

Unbelievable.

People are talking like it's two weeks until the end of the season as opposed to just two weeks into it and Pie hasn't had all that many AB's.

There should be zero question what to do with him...how is he supposed to adjust and step up if he doesn't get regular playing time? It's a painful process, but it has to be done to see if he can make the jump. If the Cubs aren't even going to bother to do that for at least a couple months, just give up on him now and trade him while he was value instead of dumping off yet another prospect they've screwed up.

Significant update here per rotoworld:

Cubs manager Lou Pineilla said the team expects Alfonso Soriano will be out "a while" with his calf injury.

Soriano underwent an MRI, and the results will be available tomorrow. It's tough to know exactly what Pineilla means by "a while," but it seems like a trip to the disabled list is possible, with Matt Murton likely to be called up to start in left field. Apr. 15 - 11:51 pm et

Oh My lord. I hate injuries so much.

I hate this even more because I bet Theriot leads off. Ugh.

It's one thing to be in a slump or not look comfortable - it's another thing to look completely overmatched. To call Pie a black hole in the lineup right now is a slap in the face to black holes.

The Cubs are a better team with Reed Johnson in the lineup. I wish it wasn't so and Felix was hitting well but right now he's just overmatched and it isn't even close. The Cubs have no room for error here - they're just not a good enough team to keep throwing him out there against every righty hoping this is the game "he'll figure it out."

Maybe that has something to do with the fact that, prior to tonight, Pie had seen all of SEVEN plate appearances over the past week. And the only reason he saw that many was because there were some games that dragged on forever and he got thrown in late. How people expect a young guy who clearly needs to work on hitting major league pitching to sit on the bench for a week then come up against one of the better pitchers in all of baseball (having an off night or not) and start to rake is beyond me.

The Cubs have no room for error here -

What? It's April and we are a game and a half back of a ST. Louis team playing way above their heads. We aren't in a late-season playoff chase, here.

they're just not a good enough team to keep throwing him out there against every righty hoping this is the game "he'll figure it out."

That's baloney. This lineup (even without Soriano) is potent. Between Lee, Ramirez, Fukudome, and even DeRosa and Soto at times, there is plenty of firepower on this team. Especially when we are going to be facing the likes of the Reds and the Pirates for the next 5 games. There is no reason not to start Pie.

I'm not expecting Pie to rake with limited appearances. I am expecting him to look like he has a clue what he's doing. You can tell when a guy is slumping and/or uncomfortable or overmatched. Pie is overmatched right now.

No, this isn't a late season playoff push but the games still count and the Cubs are likely to be neck and neck with the Brewers all year. Every game counts whether it's April or September.

There is a reason not to start Pie - his name is Reed Johnson.

They could keep throwing Pedroia out there because their offense and team was so good they could withstand his struggles. We have a better option in center right now and our offense is too inconsistent. (Now we'll take Soriano OUT of the lineup for a certain amount of time, as well).

How can you possibly use Pedroia as an argument in your favor? So if the Red Sox weren't as good as they were, they would've been better served using Alex Cora as their full-time 2B. Despite the fact that Pedroia clearly turned out to be the better player.

It seems like people are viewing this Pie situation as he's going to hit 200 the whole year and strike out 200 times. Nobody in the pro-Pie camp is pushing to give him that this season. We are pushing to give him more than 20 flippin ABs, preferrably with more than 5 of those coming in the same week.

These games don't count then? Great - I call 13-0, no joust!! Sorry Brewers...

The Brewers are better than the Cubs and every game they lose now they're going to have to make up in the end.

The reason I said they have no room for error was pointing out a team like the Red Sox last year. They could keep throwing Pedroia out there because their offense and team was so good they could withstand his struggles. We have a better option in center right now and our offense is too inconsistent. (Now we'll take Soriano OUT of the lineup for a certain amount of time, as well).

I never said the games didn't count. I said that it's early and we're right in the thick of things - if he costs us a game or two it's not going to kill us. Especially in this division.

Additionally, OUR offense is good enough to withstand the troubles Pie will go through. Soriano hasn't produced thus far anyway so the fact that he's gone isn't quite as destructive. We've managed to win with him giving little to nothing so far this season, we can manage a little longer.

Like I said before Lee, Ramirez, Fukudome, and sometimes even DeRosa and Soto provide more than enough firepower to be able to put up with a young CF'er going through his growing pains. No, our offense isn't comparable the BoSox..but the NL Central isn't comparable to the AL East either.

Furthermore, people seem to be forgetting that - despite his hot start (if you can call an .696 OPS hot), Johnson isn't that great either. His career stats are .281/.343/.751 (avg/obp/ops). And even those numbers are skewed by his ridiculous fluke year in 2006. Outside of 06 Johnson is very mediocre.

What I'm saying is - Pie, even when he's sucking, isn't going to be a huge downgrade over Johnson. Let the kid play.

Depending on the extent of Sori's injury and what the Cubs do, Who do you think gets the majority of playing time. Anyone? Vance, what are your thoughts?

I think we do something stupid like bring up Eric Patterson and start Fontenot/Cedeno at a 2B platoon with DeRosa in LF every game. And I'm not even that opposed to Cedeno/DeRosa against lefties, just the absurd idea that me call up someone for their versa-effin-tility becuase Jim Hendry lives in fear of games where our first 5 2nd basemen all get hurt. Much better to have that 5th string 2nd basemen/6th string corner OF rather than a guy who's actually proven he can hit the ball at the major league level.

Well...that's a completely different post...but I'll respond to it like this: Pie looked overmatched against one of the better pitchers in baseball after barely playing for a week. Furthermore, it's one game. The guy has TWENTY THREE plate appearances this year. Twenty three. Is it really that surprising that after riding the pine for a week, a young inexperienced player looked like crap when facing Aaron Harang?

And as for Johnson, look at my post above.
