So I'm in a private 10-team H2H league. It's a 6x6 league, with all the normal categories along with OPS for hitters and TB for pitchers.

The commissioner is trading Todd Helton and Brian Bannister for Lance Berkman. The guy he is trading with has dropped Adam Dunn, and the commissioner has first waiver priority, so the commish will be getting Dunn, too.

The same commissioner led a rallying cry to veto a Weeks/Brian Wilson for Utley trade (in which I'd get Utley) before the season started.

I personally believe trades should only be vetoed when there is collusion, but if the commish believes that lopsided should be rejected, then he should be ashamed for even proposing Dunn and Berkman for Bannister and Helton, right?

The dropping of Dunn is what makes the trade suspcious. It's like they knew the straight up trade would be shot down, so they manuevered around it with the dropping/waiver claim of Dunn. I'd veto.

I hope by "private" you don't mean these are your friends. If so, you need new friends.

I'll probably need them, as I've been kicked out of the league. Not a big loss, as I had asked to be removed from the league after the initial episode of self-serving behavior by the commissioner.

Berkman/Dunn for Helton/Bannister is bush league as hell but so is Weeks/Wilson for Utley, and I actually like Weeks.

True. But once the commissioner starts evaluating trades rather than just rumber stamping everything that's not collusion, he's committed to trying to fairly evaluate all trades for the entire season (which is why I agree w/ cheapseats re how a commissioner should run a league - don't interfere unless you suspect foul play). But to veto a trade and then make a terribly one-sided deal in your favor is total BS. Y! should have a blackball list for guys like that.

After the first two weeks of the season, as well as Utley has played, the other guy in the trade would have a better record than he has right now by three or four points. He wanted Weeks because he has a very good offense in every category but steals, and he wasn't able to draft any closers, so he's lost saves in both weeks so far.

Also, remember that total bases are a pitching category in that league, so relievers are more valuable than they are in standard leagues.

Anyway, it's a bad idea to block trades for any reason other than collusion. If you attempt to police trades based on lopsidedness, how do you measure such a thing? Yahoo rankings? PECOTA projections? The commissioner's own idea of who's valuable and who's not?

First off, it's good to hear you left the league and wouldn't stand for it.

Second off, however, the idiot who wants to trade for Helton and Bannister and give away Berkman and Dunn for them deserves to be demolished on all accounts. Berkman is the #1 player on Yahoo right nowand Dunn is a sure fire 900+OPS guy. Helton is in the downswing of his career and Bannister could be a fluke, and this guy wanted to trade for them? That guy is an idiot, and deserves to be swindled.

But since this trade came about in a shady way, vetoing and quitting is exactly what I would've done too. I wonder what the next move he would've tried had been

I've become so turned off by the free leagues anymore, I probably won't play in anymore after this year. Here is a trade offer that was sent to me yesterday:

JR Towles

BJ Ryan

Ted Lilly

Johnny Gomes

Aaron Rowand

for

Kosuke Fukudome

Johnny Cueto

Geovany Soto

George Sherrill

Why bother wasting my time with crap like that?

I don't know who it was, but in one of the NSBB leagues last year, someone would always try and makes trades like that, and when they would get rejected, they'd drop the players he tried to trade. It's like he was planning on dropping them all along but decided to put them out there and see if anyone was dumb enough to bite. And they would always play the hot hand and pick up whoever had a good game and drop whoever had a bad one. In the end they made like 120+ transactions.

I'd be pissed about it. I had a trade before the season in one of my leagues, it was a little lopsided in my favor, but it matched both of our teams needs. He needed Average and his outfield sucked. I needed HR and RBI. I would have gotten Carlos Pena for Todd Helton and Aaron Rowand. Anyway, it is a league votes league with several of my friends. Well, two of the guys on the team are roommates, and another is one of their brothers. Well, one of the roommates has access to his brothers team, so they vetoed the trade twice, because you only need 3 votes. I was pissed as hell.

I was in a league where this one guy really wanted Johan Santana, but he wasn't even willing to give to me Mark Teixeira. His final offer was Billy Butler and Tim Lincecum for Johan Santana.

I might trade Ervin Santana for Butler and Lincecum (especially in a keeper league), but that wouldn't even get talks started for Johan.

The trade offer above was made right before my team was scheduled to play his team. My team is beating his team 16-3 as of today. :D

Wow, now he's offering me Teixeira, Jon Rauch, and Tony Pena!

My editor told me the other day that a couple of years ago he was in a fantasy basketball league and a guy offered everybody a bunch of different deals that included Ron Artest right after he went into the stands. Of course the guy who had Artest claimed he offered those trades before the brawl happened.
