...is looking ugh-lee. (see what I did there?)

IIRC, he's already cost us a couple of runs via a couple of gaffes in the field. If this continues, what to do?

Yeah, him and Aramis and Fukudome should all be benched for their errors/sloppy play. That'll show 'em.

I don't usually do this, but:

1) I never said he should be benched;

2) Comparing him to Aramis and Fukudome is stupid.

well, you did ask what should be done, so i'm assuming you think some type of action should be taken. and i don't know what else could be done other than benching him. unless you want him to run laps or something.

little known fact: the late 90s yankees instituted a strict "lashes for errors" policy that torre credited for their improved team defense

Nothing can be done now. It's DeRo no matter what.

But here's a tip. Next spring, when we've had a stupid trade rumor brewing for 3 months and pitchers & catchers are about to report, it might be a good idea to put it to rest for the sake of the players who would stand to lose their jobs and are trying to prepare mentally to play the damn game.

It's too bad Mark doensn't have John Wayne's mental constitution. We've still got ballgames to win regardless. Might want to keep that in mind, Jimbo.

I have been trying to figure out what Derosa brings... no range, can't field unless hit right to him, can't lay down a bunt, can't hit and run, I call him a douple play just waiting to happen.

wait, you're saying derosa's error today was due to the trade rumors he suffered through during ST?

This argument makes no more sense now than it did in the game thread.

Uh, he has a .953 OPS right now. I'd say the errors will even themselves out as the season goes along.

I'm saying he's been noticeably worse in the field this season, and he himself said he was having trouble concentrating on baseball preparing for the season.

I'm not the only one drawing the link between the two.

We're still just 7 games in. The man is probably still trying to get his head in the game. He was probably spending most of March talking about whether he would need to uproot his family, for God's sake.

Brian Roberts was also dealing with all of the same business, and he has a 1.131 OPS. I think I've stumbled onto the new moneyball.

All you do is put trade rumors up around your roster in the offseason and just sit back and enjoy the career high OPS

Your post lacks the biting sarcasm I've come to expect from you. Having sympathy for me tonight?

I know, I'm working atm and it's hard to be funny and pay attention to a baseball game at the same time.

so it's having a drastic, negative effect on him in the field, yet he is putting up career high numbers on offense. interesting theory you've got there even though it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I doubt it. I mean, how long could those conversations have gone on?

Mark: I wonder if I'll need to uproot you guys.

Wife: Maybe. If you get traded somewhere, I guess so.

Mark: Yeah. You're right about that.

Daughter: Daddy, are we going to have to move?

Mark: I don't know. I'm wondering about that.

Wife: Yes, me too.

Mark: Yup. I just don't know what will happen.

Wife: Do you think this will affect your defense?

Mark: If I have to keep wondering if I'll get traded, it will.

Daughter: Are you getting traded, Dad?

Mark: I just don't know. I keep thinking about it.

Wife: Don't forget to eat today, honey.

Mark: Like I have time for that.

Why would DeRosa need to uproot his family if he was relegated to a utility role?

Does he even have a "family?"

Before last year, DeRo was a career utility player. Now, he is a utility player that has a heart condition. Look, DeRo is a great guy, a great teammate & a pretty good player that brings a lot of position flexibility, leadership & obp/offense to this club. On other flipside, Soriano appears to be the biggest bust & contract albatross since post-steroid Sammy. We now are finding out why one Jim Hendry was obsessing after Brian Roberts. We do not have a leadoff hitter, a natural 2B. DeRo would be perfect in a first off the bench utility role & a guy that could start 2-3 times/wk to keep everyone fresh w/ all of the Wrigley day games. I feel that Jim had a window of opportunity early in the offseason to get it done...didn't bid aggressively until later & then the O's had a change of heart. We have many holes on this team but this one will haunt us all year...IMO.

Do you have like one post that you translate into different languages and then retranslate back to English on Babelfish or something?

the handwringing about derosa is pointless. he's had a .365 obp and .275 Eqa the past two years, and he plays average defense for a second baseman. if he's only a "utility player" then half of the second basemen in major league baseball also should not be starting.

and let's calm down about soriano too, please. he goes through bad stretches every year, but at the end of the year he'll have an ops in the .850 to .900 range and an eqa around .290. he's overpriced and overrated generally, but he's a good player overall at this point in his career.
