The interview would have been great...3-4 years ago..but James doesn't create the divide now, that he once used to. Interestingly enough, for Costas being James guy, one would think I'd like him better in the booth.

It was clearly for people who don't know much about James. barely scratched the surface.

 

As a matter of fact most of the viewers didn't understand why this former HS phenom/current NBA star was talking about baseball instead of basketball.

Based on the half segment that I saw, Morely Safer didn't understand any of it.

Well, to be fair to 60 minutes, the segment was 3rd in the lineup, which is their "human interest" segment. The basic idea is to heap praise on someone for their accomplishments and give everyone a nice "feel good" story. I think they accomplished that -- they focused on his former life as a security guard, put a "rags to riches" spin on it. Made everyone feel good. They rarely go into technical details in one of these segments, so I doubt Morley really prepped himself for that side of the story.

aside from ron santo, the first person i'd put into the HoF would be bill james.
