The White Sox announced that they'll open the season with Joe Crede at third base and Josh Fields in the minors.

Fields has every right to be upset, especially since Crede has been awful both offensively and defensively this spring. It's hard to imagine Crede remaining with the White Sox in 2009, so there's not much reason to go with him now. It doesn't look like he's going to build up a bunch of trade value anytime soon. He's hit .170/.220/.277 with two RBI in 47 at-bats this spring.

The White Sox said Juan Uribe would get the first shot at second base this year.

Actually, Pablo Ozuna is expected to get the first, first shot, based entirely on his success versus Cleveland's Opening Day starter, C.C. Sabathia. Uribe, though, will play over Ozuna and Alexei Ramirez most of the time initially. It seems unlikely that he'll last a regular all year.

Wonder how long before KW is on the hot seat....... even those these decisions probably were Ozzie's.

What happened to Kenny Williams emphatically saying that either Crede or Fields would be traded by opening day? Guess there isn't much of a market for a guy with a bad back and a sub 200 BA.

I can't find the article, but Ozzie recently went on record as to why Joe Crede didn't have more value in trade circles, then he currently does. All I remember was laughing at Ozzie at atucally think that Crede had trade value.

He does have trade value; he's a third baseman who hits for power and plays defense, and has the false aura of being a "clutch hitter" about him. For teams like the Dodgers and Giants who are without anything resembling a real third baseman, that has value. The punchline is that Crede doesn't have nearly the trade value that the White Sox think he does, because every other peripheral of his sorta sucks; weren't they asking for Cain or Lincecum from San Fran in exchange?

A third basemen that's a career 446 slugging percentage is now considered a power hitter?

Yes and no; apologies, I should have been more clear. No, a career .446 SLG isn't particularly good. But yes, a guy who hit 22 HRs in 2005, 30 in 2006 and hasn't hit fewer than 19 in any season where he's made at least 470 PAs now has the reputation, in the common sense if not the statistical sense, as a "power hitter" whether it's an accurate description or not. Now let's say Colletti or Sabean or whomever were kicking the tires on Crede. Despite our hope as more statistically-inclined baseball fans that people in the position of GM for a major league team would look at far more than just homers and RBIs, do you suppose they would give more weight to the career .446 SLG or the 92 HRs in four seasons as a "regular" (470+ PAs) third baseman?
