Not good.

Alfonso Soriano's finger was more swollen than expected monday, making a return early this week unlikely.

"His finger was really swollen today," manager Lou Piniella said. "I don't know (how long) -- a week or so. He'll have to tell us. It's going to be a while. It's not going to be a matter of 2-3 days." When they announced the injury yesterday, the Cubs said Soriano would likely miss 3-5 days.

I have no clue why they would say a fractured finger would heal in 3-5 days in the first place. I fractured my thumb last summer, I was out 4 weeks.

Cedeno leads off with a single off the first baseman's glove and dives into the first-base bag (ugh)

I just don't think there's anything (outside of punishing the players for doing it), that will stop some guys from diving into 1B.

Didn't you hear? It's faster to dive into first! One of our posters did a test of 10 people.

I have a broken middle finger right now and there is no way he is playing before 2-3 weeks. No grip strength at all, not to mention its pretty un-comfortable. Not sure where he broke his, but I broke the tip of mine.

I purposely stayed far away from that thread.

Bot 2

Wilkerson leads off with a single after looking like he was called out on a 1-2 pitch.

Clement flied to deep right; Fukudome nearly doubled Wilkerson off first on the fly. Great throw.

LaHair doubled to right-center; Fukudome with ball in quickly.

Lopez grounds 4-3, getting an RBI on a topper.

Reed singles off Lieber's foot, scoring a run.

Reed caught stealing on a bullet by Koyie Hill.

2-0 Seattle

Lieber: 17 pitches, 11 strikes

total: 26 pitches, 18 strikes

First-pitch strikes to seven of nine batters faced.

And it took him only 4 minutes to throw that many pitches, amazing!

Bottom 3

Kiger reaches on dropped third strike. Wild pitch

Ichiro walked on a 3-2 pitch

Bloomquist flied to medium right; Fukudome with a strike into Theriot (Sorry, but I'm not used to seeing those things.)

Norton grounds 5-4-3 DP on nice pick by Cintron

Marshall: 15 pitches, 9 strikes

KOSUKE CANNON

Is anyone worried about Fukudome's inability to hit it out of the infield (save his lone hit, which was a bouncer down the line) so far in Spring? I heard multiple reports from AZ about observes commenting on Fukudomes lack of power in batting practice, and nothing has changed when the games started either. Bruce maybe you could shed some light.

I'm not worried just yet. It's the guy's first plate appearances against an entirely new set of pitchers, and this is only the 4th game he's played in. He's not going to be tagging everything thrown his way immediately.

I'm just saying, this is the same thing that beat writers were saying after watching him hit in BP. BP pitches are not the same as in game pitches.

I wouldn't be concerned about the BP bit either.

Marshall's control problems continue.

Hopefully the Baltimore scouts had the chili and had to make a trip to the restroom right now.
