Has anyone in the media had the insight or balls to ask Uncle Lou if he has thought about giving DeRosa a serious time to play a majority of the time at SS?

I mean, this doesn't even have to be based on a potential acquisition of Roberts. From what I've seen out of Theriot and Patterson, I can't see DeRosa/Patterson being worse than Theriot/DeRosa. Obviously DeRosa/Roberts would be an upgrade on both, but that's probably never going to happen until they have the spotlight all to themselves.

Or is everyone bowing down to Piniella and trusting his man-love for Theriot?

Well I think it's safe to say that no one is bowing down to Piniella on his man love for Theriot on this board. It's pretty evident most people here don't want Theriot to start at short. As far as insiders, journalists, etc? No clue

One generally assumes that if they felt DeRosa was at all capable of playing shortstop on something more than an emergency basis, they'd have tried it by now.

Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella think that Ryan Theriot is a competent major league shortstop and have no interest in exploring other options at that position.

I'm not sure the upgrade from Theriot to Paterson offensively would be worth the downgrades defensively at both short and second. It would be close, but at best it would be a minor upgrade.

I would definitely support DeRosa at SS if a better 2nd baseman was acquired, but I don't think it would be much help to put him there right now.

As for Theriot, whenever the Cubs go into their first slump offensively Lou will likely replace whoever is doing worse out of Theriot or Pie. Hopefully that is Theriot, and Cedeno or DeRosa can nail down the job.

There is no way DeRosa is getting PT @ SS consistently. I can't imagine he'd be very good there at all and obviously neither do the Cubs. I'm all for an upgrade, but not Derosa moving there.

I think there is more than a handful of people here that would be happy if Piniella would move DeRosa to SS and Theriot to 2B.

lol

that would achieve nothing

just musical chairs

I'm pretty sure there's less than a handful. Probably none.

You're probably right, but considering how good the Cubs defense could be this year with potential gold glovers in Pie, Fukudome, Ramirez and Lee, I think the hit the Cubs take defensively at SS between Theriot and DeRosa would be worth it offensively. Theriot isn't exactly a stellar defender. His range is average and his arm is well below average. Theriot probaby has more range and a better glove, but DeRosa has a better arm.

Basically, the trade off I see is Theriot getting to balls that DeRosa wouldn't get to, but DeRosa would throw guys out that Theriot wouldn't be able to throw out, including relay throws from the outfield.

Of course, the only reason to even consider DeRosa at SS is if they got a better 2b than DeRosa.

Right on. I don't know why everyone here thinks the Cubs have never even considered having DeRosa play short. I'm sure they've thought of it, and they've probably decided that he'd be a disaster defensively.

But if they acquired Roberts and moved DeRosa to the "supersub" role wouldn't they try to find him some PT at SS? I think yes given that he won't get much at either corner OF and they probably don't want him in CF.
