Just heard it on ESPN 1000 update

Waddle and Silvy haven't talked about it, but they probably just don't view it as being worthy of discussion.

Wasn't there a report recently that Cintron had signed (or was about to sign) elsewhere?

No details/link yet.

Why? Just to make us feel like Theriot really is a good option?

A couple of weeks ago we heard that they were looking at Cintron as a backup SS in case they traded Cedeno in a Roberts deal. Maybe they just wanted to have him in camp already in case that deal does happen.

Interesting....something is brewing. There is no reason to have Theriot, Cedeno AND Cintron on this team, and there is no reason to have Cedeno in the minors again this year.

Was this a minor-league deal or a major league contract? If it's a minor league deal, he could be insurance. If it's a major league deal, then it's a head scratcher.

No word yet on that.

Baltimore was the other team who was on the verge of signing Cintron. I have no idea why he would take a minor league deal with the Cubs over a major league deal with the Orioles, so I presume this must mean Cedeno is leaving in some fashion.

Beside one decent year, Cintron is terrible. Has his defense improved any? Just trying to find some upside to this signing.

Yeah, now I'm convinced Roberts is coming. And it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see Cintron start quite a few games.

IF depth chart:

Starters:

Mark DeRosa

Ryan Theriot

Derrek Lee

Aramis Ramirez

Bench:

Ronny Cedeno

Alex Cintron

Mike Fontenot

Hybrid (can play IF and OF):

Daryle Ward

Eric Patterson

Long shot hybrids (can play IF if a catastrophy happens):

Alfonso Soriano

Kosuke Fukudome

Henry Blanco

Carlos Marmol

Probably Carlos Zambrano

Joking aside, thats a lot of mediocre depth

Someone else is saying on OH (just another Cubs fan who heard a subsequent update) that it is, in fact, a minor league deal. I missed the next update.

But, just because there's no reason to stockpile SS doesn't mean our team won't. Just like 2B every other year.

I hope this means something more, but color me skeptical since we've seen these kinds of signings before for no reason.

Cintron = Macias '08

Eh.. Hyperbole....

Macias could play for 100 years and never put up an .850 OPS over the course of ~450 ABs.

Macias would kill to be Cintron.

Cintron = Izturis

There you go.

well cintron would = izturis if the plan is to start him. i'm thinking more along the lines of "first pinch-hitter every game regardless of situation"

You can do that because he's a switch-hitter, dude.

If Cedeno goes somewhere in a trade, and Theriot starts out with a thud, what do you think is gonna happen?
