Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the Tigers have agreed to terms with Curtis Granderson on a multi-year contract.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed yet. Granderson isn't arbitration eligible yet and was under the Tigers' control through 2011 anyway, so the contract would have to cover at least five seasons to buy out any of his free agency.

Tigers agreed to terms with outfielder Curtis Granderson on a five-year contract with a team option for 2013.

Terms have not been disclosed yet, but ESPN reports that the deal is worth $30.25 million plus the option. Granderson wasn't arbitration eligible yet and was under the Tigers' control through 2011 anyway, so the contract potentially buys out his first two seasons of free agency. In dealing top prospect Cameron Maybin to the Marlins earlier this offseason the Tigers made it clear that Granderson is their center fielder of the future and he figures to be one of the AL's premier all-around players during the life of the contract, although his inability to hit left-handed pitching remains a huge weakness.

One of the South Side's very own gets paid.

Now let's see Granderson become a COMPLETE player, and learn how to hit lefties at a decent clip.

His 2007 line against lefties of .225/.269/.494 is downright awful.

And there's one less lefty in that division this week (Santana). I think the Tigers will come out of this okay.

Granderson's salary will more than double, going from $410,000 last season to $1 million this year. He'll be paid $3.5 million in 2009, $5.5 million in 2010, and $8.25 million in 2011. Essentially, the Tigers bought out Granderson's first free-agent season for a $10 million salary in 2012, and his 2013 option could rise to $15 million if he hits his performance bonuses.

If he continues to improve that is a nice deal for the Tigers. This helps keep down costs, money that can be spent on Verlander and Cabrera!

There's still Liriano, Sabathia and Buehrle, but point taken.

I didn't say the Tigers didn't do alright with this signing, I just said, Granderson now needs to hit lefties at a better clip, to be worth the money he's getting.

When your lead off CF is hitting 84 XBH's per season and posting a 136 OPS+, who cares how well or bad he hits lefties?

I'd be happy with Pie putting up a .750 OPS against lefties this year, since that would probably mean he's 100 points higher against righties( in many more PA's against those righties).

I just like my stud players to be able to handle lefties as well as righties.

There hasn't been a player in the history of the game who has been so studly that no pitcher could get him out. Curtis Granderson just finished his 2nd full season at the major league level. A speedy CF with 84 XBH's is awesome, whether he can hit a lefty or not. The league leaders in XBH's in 2007 were Matt Holliday (92) and David Ortiz (88), and whether they dominated both RHP and LHP to get to those numbers really doesn't matter, because what you end up with is a very solid season's worth of production, no matter where it came from.

Would it be nice if Granderson could hit lefties better than he does? Sure. At the expense of how tough he is against RHP? No.

I'm not even sure he'll repeat his 2007 season, and he's certainly not my favorite player. But, if you ask me today if I could find a spot on the roster for a speedy 84 XBH CF who can't hit lefties at all, I will answer yes, I have a starting job that just opened up, and I'd trade or cut whoever was blocking him.

Jacque Jones couldn't hit lefties when he was on the Cubs. But, he didn't hit righties very well, either. Jacque only got 99 XBH's in 2 full seasons in Chicago, so the Cubs are better off without him.

I hope Pie can be a guy like Granderson or Sizemore. But, I'd trade Pie for either one of them right this moment.

This just in...Tigers have best offense in history of baseball.

It wouldn't be too far off to make that claim, but they do have a lot of question marks going into the 2008 season. The health of Sheffield, Maggs, Pudge and Guillen being the biggest.

But, when your #9 hitter is a platoon with career numbers that look like this:

Thames: .263 .333 .512 .845

Jones: .294 .342 .483 .825

There should be reason to celebrate what will undoubtedly be an explosive offense.

Yeah but thats there 9 hitter...Granderson all-star, Palanco all-star, Mags all-star, Renteria all-star, Miguel Cabrera all-star, Guillen and Pudge all-stars in recent years, Sheffield when healthy he can still hit the carp out of the ball.

I think you missed what I was saying. An .825-.845 OPS from a #9 hitter is pretty good.

I'd imagine that statistically this might be true looking at their starting nine's individual stats from last year.

Having the best offense, doesn't guarantee a championship, or the Texas Rangers/Cleveland Indians of the mid to late 90s, would be the dynasty of that decade, and not the Yankees.
