you think this guy is a walking injury?

if we go by OMC's way of classifying things, I broke my ankle in high school and reinjured it every day for almost two months.

Trip B, Jose Rijo took about 5 years off and came back adn pitched well(briefly) He was a lot older than Prior. It's not the time off that worries me, it's whether his shoulder is just done for.

I once again feel the need to reiterate(I lost count of how many times I have) that this is the 1st surgery Prior has had Prior has not had his injuries taken care of then he comes back with something new. It's why I took issue with OMC's listings of injuries. That was a shoulder injury that was never taken care of in ST, got to be too much to pitch with by the summer, then surprise was still hurting by ST after it wasn't taken care of. Is an injury considered chronic when you never did anything to address the injury in the first place?

Is there proof that all of his shoulder problems were in fact the same problem? It's very possible they were separate injuries. I'm not arguing, just asking because I really don't know.

Tough to say without objective medical evidence and an expert to interpret the same.

Rijo pitched well after his 5 years off? Sure, in 2001 he had a 2.12 ERA in 17 innings, but it came with a 1.65 WHIP. That's just luck over that few of innings. The next year was his final year in the majors when he had a 5.14 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP. He never had any success after he came back, although he wouldn't be a good example to point out that Prior couldn't come back either (Rijo's age and longer history of arm troubles made his comeback a lot tougher than Prior's would be).

But, there is more to it than just having surgery. I have to believe that having surgery immediately after you first get injured is better than having surgery after pitching with the injury on multiple or numerous occasions. But, I suppose there is always the possibility that surgery fixes the problem regardless of how long you wait. The other issue is if his mechanics caused the problems in the first place, he's likely going to need to change those mechanics to avoid future problems, and no one really knows what effect changing his mechanics will do in getting big league hitters out.

Did he change his mechanics when he came back in 2006? He was clearly not the same pitcher we saw in 2003. Maybe he was ineffective due more to shoulder problems than an actual mechanic adjustment.

You're a walking jaw injury waiting to happen.

Anywho, I admit, I'm just spitballing and have about as much medical knowledge as Will Carroll(OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SNAP), though to be fair to myself, nobody else speculating on this stuff has the medical knowledge either. It seems logical to me that in '06 his shoulder was shot in ST(why he went on the DL). He tried to pitch through the pain, but as evidenced by the results he wasn't the same pitcher. ST '07 rolls around and he once again looks pathetic complaining of again an injury to his pitching shoulder. I don't see how you conclude from that that Prior's shoulder was A-OK, and he just happened to re-injure it every time he tried to throw a ball again.

BBB, there's little doubt in my mind his '06 performance was due to intense shoulder pain. Are there theories that it's due to adjusted mechanics? Your other question, your guess is as good as mine, as I said I know pretty much nothing about those things work.

How in the world are you a good comparison? You can't even take a punch, you wuss. You're softer than Miss Prior.

Sarcasm, by the way.

You're dead on. Current research suggests that after an injury, it takes as little as 7-10 DAYS, yes DAYS, to develop scar tissue. Once that happened, Mark was in trouble. A "kink" anywhere in the kinetic chain that is the throwing motion will lead to compensation and additional injuries along the chain.

I think the one thing people are omitting in discussing his injury history is the significance of the fact that it is his shoulder and not his elbow/forearm/bicept. Who comes back from shoulder injuries? Carp briefly did it, but the success rate is quite low. Whether its one injury, many injuries, finally diagnosed and had surgery, whatever...its the shoulder and as far as I know theres no magic shoulder surgery like their is for UCLs.

This thread is an example of what happens when the Mods go on vacation.

Or get sick as is the case with me (and Tim's been under the weather as well). Suffice to say that this thread is under observation.

I think I spend more time on NSBB when I am sick. Feel better.

Jamey Newberg had this to say about Prior...

Texas, now presumably even more interested in bringing a veteran starter to

camp on a make-good deal now that Edinson Volquez has been removed from the

mix, reportedly continues to consider righthanders Bartolo Colon and Jason

Jennings, both of whom are coming off of unproductive, injury-marred

seasons. The Rangers also kicked the tires on righthanders Mark Prior (who

has signed a one-year deal with San Diego) and Freddy Garcia but were

sufficiently turned off by their medicals.

If pitching starved Texas was scared about Prior's medical history, it must be pretty ugly.

I for one want more of PrimeTime's brilliant analysis regarding Mark Prior's anatomy. It added so much to the discussion, and reflected so positively on the poster that he is, that I just need more.

Its a freakin joke man..Prior is not your father..I dont get why people get bent so out of shape because people joke around about a player..I don't know if you have some secret crush or fascination with him, but I could care less if you made a joke or hate some athlete I like..Not everyone is going to like the samething and over half this board bashes some player or sometihng else..So learn to deal with it..

Yeah dudes, why bring any reasonable maturity to this thread unless it's just because you have a ♥secret crush♥ on him?

YOU AND PRIOR, SITTIN' IN A TREE...
