Looking online for a Fukudome jersey, I've seen jersey with "Fukudome" on the back, and others with "Kosuke" on the back. Anyone know what the actual jersey will say? And why is there this discrepancy?

Mods, feel free to move this to a more appropriate forum if I have put it in the wrong place.

there is alot of speculation (I dont think anyone from the Cubs themselves have said) that he will have his 1st name (Kosuke) on his jersey because he was for-warned of the translation irregularity of his last name (Fukudome)

Kosuke looks like the prevailing option.

It's actually going to just say Steve.

This is a legitimate opinion and should not be discarded simply because stats don't support it.

After IMB!'s joke is adjusted for all time and park factors, it appears to fall flat of the league average.

That just says he's ASKED to use his first name. So they can still say Fuke no buddy. Then cut a deal where he agrees to play CF just in case we trade Pie for Craig Counsell.

Let's file that in the "Possible but Unlikely" column for now.

Kosuke it is!

anyone think it may be possible he cahnges it next season after he sees all the Fukudome jerseys and shirts that are llikely to be sold in the stads? or is there a MLB rule prohibiting players from doing that?

I think he could, but I think there is an application process. Luckily MLB is not the No Fun League.

I don't think there's strictly a rule against it, but I've always figured that teams "strongly encourage" their marquee players (read: players they mass produce jerseys and shirts for) not to change numbers on a whim, because then they have to manufacture new merchandise and market it. Slightly different situation, but I remember that during the WBC in 2006, Miguel Tejada wanted to wear No. 4 (his number with Oakland) on his Dominican team jersey, but was turned away from doing so because they had already made a ton of merchandise with No. 10 (his number with Baltimore) on it.

Any piece of merchandise licensed by the MLBPA (which I'd wager is most of it, outside of the really really cheap stuff sold outside Wrigley) will say KOSUKE 1 on it to match his jersey. Furthermore, I think I saw where someone on this board tried to order a FUKUDOME 1 custom jersey/shirt and the order was cancelled shortly thereafter. The bottom line is that I think the Cubs and their official licensors will try and cut down on FUKUDOME 1 merchandise as much as possible, but the fans are a resourceful and free-spending lot and the Fukudome name is going to get its fair share of play on unlicensed/customized merchandise.

Nice to see that the "attack the post and not the poster" can be skirted around as long as you do it passive-aggressively...

Anyway, thanks for the heads up...apparently, there are a number of outlets online that are going to have some merchandise issues. Its fairly amazing to me considering its all based upon a childish mispronunciation of his last name.

Man, if you only knew the half of it.

I imagine most of them will set it straight once Fukudome is introduced this week.

Has anyone heard what day his press conference is yet?
