I have also learned that the Cubs have significant interest in Angels IF/OF Chone Figgins who could be available if the Halos land a third baseman in another deal. They are actively pursuing Tigers 3B Brandon Inge who is now expendable because of the trade that brought Miguel Cabrera to Detroit. The Cubs want Figgins to play CF and if they are successful in landing him and Roberts the speed of the team would jump dramatically. That would also allow Lou Piniella to move Alfonso Soriano down in the batting order to drive in more runs.

Reads to me like the Angels are persuing Inge, not the Cubs.

Hendry sure is obsessed with players coming off of career years.

He seems to count on players reproducing their career years quite a bit, even if it wasn't in the most recent year. Sure, Cesar Izturis sucks, but he hit .280 a few years ago!

Let's see....

Mark DeRosa falls under this.

There are a certain couple of relievers who received lucrative, multi-year contracts a couple years ago as well.

The offense is still a more pressing area of need.

howry was good for a couple of years before we signed him and has been a pretty good reliever for most of his career... you'd have a hard time finding anyone who would say that the howry signing wasn't a very good one for the cubs.

the eyre signing, on the other hand, was idiotic.

I wonder where Hendry sees Figgins fitting in. If he's looking at him as an everyday CF-er, then I think it's a great addition.

I kinda wonder if the interest in Figgins is to open up Pie to go to the O's in a Roberts deal, or as an alternative to Fukudome. I also wonder what the cost would be for Figgins.

I wasn't thinking Howry. I was thinking more of Hawkins.

Why in the world would anyone want to get Silva? Especially for the money he is due to make in his new contract. Many were on here complaining about Marquis' 3 21MM contract. Last year Silva was barely better and is rumored to be looking for 4/40MM.

Wrigleyville's ire aside, LaTroy was pretty good for the Cubs and has been pretty good through most of his career (since 2002, at least).

if the cubs had used him as a setup man instead of trying to make him a closer, he'd probably have been really good for us, just like he was for the twins

Figgins will be 30 come opening day. Fukudome is 30 and will be 31 for most of next season. Roberts is 30. I just wish some of the guys we're pursuing would be in the 26-28 range..
