He's young, good, relatively cheap, and under control for the next 3 seasons. Why would Oakland want to trade him?

I could understand it if he was a soon to be FA, but he's not Whoever doesn't get Santana can probably get Haren and be better off.

beane understands the dow jones of baseball. he knows just the right time to move a guy in terms of performance vs money, motivation, budgetary reasons. GM's in chicago have never understood this.

Do any of those Oakland pitchers ever leave Oakland and pitch as well elsewhere? At least recently?

Why does his second half look like such rubbish? A 1.50 WHIP? A .298 BAA against? If a Chicago Cub had a second half like that we'd replace him with Steve Trachsel in September.

Dan Haren's FIP the past three years has been 3.84, 4.15, and 3.82. That's very good, but not an ace, I think. He's no Santana.

Haren is available provisionally, I think; I imagine Beane is hoping someone steps forward and overwhelms him with a dream package, much like he tried to do with Barry Zito.

Probably because they don't think they'll have a shot at the playoffs in the next three years and would rather bring in people who will be there for 5 or 6.

I highly doubt Beane moves him for anything less than a good haul.

The A's don't have a particularly strong farm system either. That's why I was hopeful the Cubs would ask about Nick Swisher (not happening). But I imagine that if, say the Dodgers offered LaRoche, Hu, Kershaw, and a bullpen arm like Meloan and offered to take back Eric Chavez in the deal the A's would do that. That's the kind of ridiculous haul I imagine it would take.

Peter Gammons this morning, on Mike and Mike, suggested the Red Sox will offer Crisp, Lester, and a minor leagure (Chad Lowrie I think) for Haren if they do not get Santanna.

Like others have said its mostly the fact that the pitching market is ridiculously thin. Also, I think it helps that there is another Ace on the market in Santana, and multiple teams after him with great farm systems. The three teams that do end up missing out on Santana (since it seems like him being traded is a forgone conclusion) will be sorely disappointed. Most likely their offers or some rumors of their offers will be out to the public, so Beane will have the upper hand in terms of leverage because he'll know what the teams are willing to give up and be in a position to demand nearly that much.

Additionally, Haren is coming off of an amazing first half of the season which got a ton of publicity. Hes also 3 years away from FA so a team acquiring him will have him under control for cheap, as opposed to Santana who you are basically paying a posting fee to sign for big money. Beane could argue that Haren should garner a better package than Santana.

What he said.

I've been watching Haren, and he just isn't as good as his amazing first half was last year. Beane knows this too, and knows to sell high if he can get some great players in return.

With that in mind, should the Cubs declare that Hill is on the market for the right package? While he's not quite as attractive as Haren, I bet every team out there would love to have Hill. Maybe someone will bowl them over.

I cant see Beane trading Haren unless he has some sort of unknown injury. Trading haren now just wouldnt be his style. He usually sells high but not too early.

this isn't too early. haren's value will never be higher than it is right now (actually, it probably was at the all-star break but that's beside the point).

beane would have no interest in Pie as he does not believe in base stealing & values on base percentage & low strikeout totals. He would have no use for Pie at all.

Why must be why Beane is actively shopping Nick Swisher...

I meant too early in terms of dollars. He will still be relatively cheap and very productive for the next 3 years or so.

and that's what makes him especially valuable. Not just to the As, but to other teams as well

Then why has Beane been mentioned in Lastings Milledge trade rumors for years now? Pie and Milledge are somewhat similar players in those respects.

Dan Haren-S-Athletics Dec. 4 - 12:13 am et

Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown reports that the Tigers have indicated a willingness to part with Andrew Miller in a Dan Haren trade.

It's highly doubtful that they'd trade both Miller and Cameron Maybin for Haren, but they don't have a lot besides Miller to offer. Jeff Larish, Brent Clevlen and Scott Sizemore are their top remaining offensive prospects, while Dallas Trahern and likely reliever Eulegio De La Cruz lead the pitchers (Rick Porcello isn't yet eligible to be traded). A deal is probably a long shot.
