Quote from Hendry:

"I feel very comfortable where I'm at and with my superiors," Hendry said Tuesday. "There's not another job in the world I would take besides general manager of the Chicago Cubs."

Who else would have you?

Kruger Industrial Smoothing? Maybe.

Do we know if the Blackhawks approached McDonough or if McDonough approached them

Hawks reportedly approached him 10 days ago.

Please take Hendry with you, John.

As a hockey fan I love this move. I'm not even a Blackhawk fan. If he makes the Blackhawks a viable option for people to spend there sports entertainment dollars on it only helps the NHL. Losing him really doesn't affect the cubs that much as he was probably not going to be the president in another year anyways.

I can just see Hendry referring to Keith Magnuson as a "quality, quality guy".

He was a heck of a fighter.

Heck no. Let's not foist Hendry-ism on the Hawks just when there's finally a bit of light at the end of the tunnel!

He was actually. And I'm sure you realize he was killed a few years ago...right? Not a great story. He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Rob Ramage (also ex-Nhl'er). Magnuson was killed along with other people I believe. Ramage was drunk.

Magnuson did a lot of charitable things and was a good guy. Bad ending to his life.

wish he would take hendry with him

Screw you man.

As a Blackhawks fan, this is GREAT news. \:D/

seconded, looks like they're finally ready to start getting their fans back. i'm incredibly excited for the hawks, he's a perfect fit.

he saw the handwriting on the wall about oh, say, before he even took the position with the cubs.

If the Blackhawks want to get their fans back they should try actually making the playoffs one of these years. Winning will do the trick much more so than having some American Girl and Precious Moments giveaways. My concern with McDonough as President is that all he knew about was how to hype the games and not how to win games. He was never going to challenge Hendry and his baseball operations group about how to build a team because he didn't have the baseball experience and credibility to do so.

You DO know what his previous position with the Cubs was right?

McDonough's departure will make Hendry even more desperate to impress right away. This will mean the Kaz Matsui contract will be as heavily backloaded as all the others.

I share your concern, which is why he needs to be seperate from the hockey decisions. But I don't think it can hurt to try and do whatever possible to draw in Hawks fans. As much as they were their own worst enemy driving fans away, it's going to take more than a playoff drive to bring back fans. I think it was 2001 when they actually had a pretty good year, but by then it was too late and people had already given up on the team. There was very little excitement, nothing compared to what I sense is possible with the current core of young players. Also, if we are going to expect them to actually spend on stars, we are going to need to see huge increases in attendence and ratings. The Hawks were probably one of the few teams that actually was losing money when they said they were, because they were getting like 9000 people on a regular basis, without drawing in any TV revenue.

Stupid circus trip...I really wanted to go to a Hawks game while I was home this week.

Looks like I'll have to wait til December to catch the young studs in action. It sucks for my ego knowing I am cheering for kids younger than me however. That's a tough pill to swallow.

Yeah, I must say, the first thing McDonough did when he took over was start winning more games than the Cubs had previously. I think he's shown he has enough good sense to apply what leadership needs to be applied at his level in the organization to put it on a better track. He might not know the intimate details of the game, but nobody's expecting him to strap up and start giving Havlat pointers.

...and there IS a whole bunch of PR work that needs to be done with this club and its fans. The damage done by Wirtz was deep, fans wrote this team off and backed it up by staying away.

Yeah, McDonough had nothing to do with Cubs winning. He'll have nothing to do with the Hawks winning. The Cubs don't need a good marketing man, they haven't needed one since at least 2003, and probably 1998. The Hawks are in need of PR, hype, marketing, etc. They need more than 11,000 people seeing games.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't think there's some kind of impediment because McDonough isn't a "sports man."

He's clearly a sports man, he's been in the sports business for decades. What he's not is a hockey man. That can be an impediment if he makes hockey decisions, but I can only hope he doesn't.
