Most of them have already been mentioned elsewhere (like Harben and Renshaw), but some haven't (like Lopez being released). From BA.

Chicago Cubs

Released: RHP Brad Clipp, RHP Donald Walters, 3B Brandon Taylor, OF Andy Lopez

The Cubs acquired Lopez from the Devil Rays in the February trade that sent righthander J.K. Ryu to Tampa Bay. The 20-year-old Lopez made it to high Class A for nine games in 2007, but has spent much of his time in rookie ball and low Class A since being the Rays’ eighth-round pick from high school in 2005.

Chicago Cubs

Signed: RHP Adam Harben, LHP Les Walrond, SS Carlos Rojas

Traded: RHP Jake Renshaw to Orioles to complete earlier trade for RHP Steve Trachsel

Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Adam Harben

Jan 5 - 11: (from BA.com)

Chicago Cubs

Released: RHP Corey Bachman, RHP Michael Bartek, 2B Patrick Brooks, 2B Bill Moss

SS Jemel Spearman

Traded: OF Angel Pagan to Mets for RHP Ryan Meyers and OF Corey Coles

Seems odd they would cut Spearman. SS is an awful shallow position throughout the organization and Spearman at least provided roster filler, though not really a prospect.

Is it possible Spearman elected to just move on to a new career and the transaction lists Spearman as just being "released" because that's the way transactions are usually announced?

Spearman played little, if any, SS in recenty years. He was a utility guy, primarily playing 2B and OF the last two seasons.

That said, you could still be right.

I didn't really see Spearman catching on with either Tennessee or Iowa, and at age 27, he hadn't proven enough to take away a spot from any of the other utility players who are younger or have a higher upside. That being said, I had him being one of the last cuts though.

I think this is more of the polite thing to do, so that Jemel has a chance to catch on with another organization before spring training begins. Just my two cents.

None of these moves are surprising, but I'm glad to see some of the excess being removed. It helps to clarify the depth chart a bit.

Not so soon -

The New Jersey Jackals [Can-Am League] have announced the signing of infielder/outfielder Jemel Spearman for the 2008 season.
