I know there's a poll on this, but I think it needs a normal discussion thread since it seems like this could potentially happen.

The recommendation, by a 25-5 vote, was limited to boundary calls -- whether potential home runs are fair or foul, whether balls go over fences or hit the top and bounce back, and whether fans have interfered with a possible homer.

Well at least we won't have to wait for Froemming to waddle on over to the camera to make the call.

We wouldn't have to even without instant replay. He's retiring.

The place where we need electronic verification is balls and strikes, not home run calls. How much complaining is done about home run calls?

I couldn't disagree more. Do you really want to see the home ump eliminated in baseball? Maybe it's the conventionalist in me, but I'd absolutely hate to see the day when balls and strikes are called by some robot. The game is becoming less pure every year; adding "electronic verification", as you call it, would just make it worse.

what could be less pure than a floating strike zone?

i, personally, would LOVE to see the HP umpire replaced by a machine.

How about a compromise, where we keep the live home umpire but give teams the chance to 'challenge' a ball/strike call. The challenge would then be taken to QuesTec or whatever where the actual location of pitch would be used to possibly overturn the umpire's call.

how about we have a live ump, but whenever his call differs from what QuesTec detects as a ball or strike, he gets a few volts of electricity pumped through his sack?

I don't want that, personally, but that would be a more pressing need for electronics than home run calls.

Jim Hendry was one of the 5 GMs who voted against instant replay.

Please. You think MLB is going to even try getting a ball-strike confirmation system past the ump union? Fuhgetaboutit.

if you were really going to use a computer to call balls and strikes, umpires' jobs become very replaceable. you could probably just tell the union to go to hell and come up with your umpires elsewhere to make base calls if you wanted. i figure that if you've got the ball-strike computer going, it's not going to be any big thing to get the fair/foul one going as well. all the human umpires need to do is make calls on the bases, keep track of outs, and make sure angry players and managers don't beat up the robots.
