I'm likely going to be selling my Wii in the near future because I really want to play Rock Band, and the downloadable content is important to that. So I'm going to either get a PS3 or Xbox360. I know the 360 has more HD space, but PS3's online services are free, correct? I don't have HDTV, but Blu-ray may be nice in the future if/when I do get HDTV. I go back and forth on this. I'm kinda leaning toward PS3, but only 40GB?

Help.

My thought is to put a reserve on it of $400. It seems several systems with 2 controllers and wii play are going for that much, and with the xmas rush, I think I can get that.

i voted Xbox360 only because i have 25 or so Xbox games and I love the controller. I've always hated the PS controller (triangle button? really?)

that said, the fact that PS3 has a Blu-Ray built in (vs. the $150 or whatever add-on for HDDVD)

PS3

I've always loved my PS2 and previously PS One, Sony is by far my favorite manufacturer of video games. And, I've heard from some friends that the 360 isn't very reliable and furthermore IMO PS3 has better graphics.

If I was interested in getting a HD dvd player of some sort, the PS3. But am I right in remembering that you don't have a HD television?

Right. I don't own an HDTV, sadly.

Do NOT worry about this. Sony was smart enough to make the hard drive removable. You can put ANY 2.5" SATA hard drive into your ps3. You can swap it out easily. I originally had a 60 gb ps3, but I found a good deal on a 160 gb laptop hard drive for $90 and I bought it and put it in my ps3. You can also hook up external hard drives to it. Though if you go that route the two USB ports on the 40 gig model may suck, though I think you can use a regular USB splitter thing. When you want to save something from online, you're given the option to save it to anything, so you can select an external HD. The PS3 will also become a DVR in a couple years too. Sony is planning that. You can upgrade your hard drive then to accommodate.

Quit it with the technobabble... :D

Seriously though, that's great info. I was already kinda leaning toward PS3...that the hard drive is that easily upgradable might be the topper.

Is swapping it out something where you have to crack the thing open, or is it just like switching a disk drive out of a laptop situation?

wait, is the 40g really awaiting a firmware update to be able to play ps2 games?

There is no backwards compatability on the 40g version. I could be wrong, but I don't believe there's a firmward update to do that. It's something they flat out don't plan on doing I believe.

I had no idea the 40gb PS3 didn't play PS2 games. Good thing I read this thread. Anyways, what is the hard drive used for? That amount of storage seems like enough for saved games and media. What else can be stored on there?

You could also spend an extra $100 and get the 80gb with Motor Storm for $499.

The hard drive space is also used for downloadable content like songs for Guitar Hero or Rock Band, or maps for various FPS's.

I don't know how long this deal will last, but it's worth getting:

http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=A1320793

40 GB PS3

Spiderman 3 Blu Ray

HDMI Cable

Ratchet and Clank

---------

$400

(!).

If you can shell out 100 more dollars down the line you can get a 120 gb hard drive.

That deal is only for Canadian customers. Maybe it was for U.S. customers when you posted it, but I finally got around to looking at it today and it's only Canadian. Sucks too, because I wanted to get the 80gb ps3 with motor storm and they were offering it with 2 wireless controllers for the same $499 that it's offered everywhere else. So basically I would have gotten an extra wireless controller (worth around 60 bucks), but I can't because I'm not Canadian.

Sucks.

Are you referring to the requirment for digital signals? I don't believe that has anything to do with HDTV.
