Free agent Sammy Sosa wants at least $7 million to postpone retirement and play in 2008.

Sorry, Sammy, but that's simply not realistic. Sosa was on waivers after the trade deadline and not one team opted to claim him. He proved in 2007 that he can be a useful bat against left-handers, but he wasn't productive at all against righties (676 OPS) and he's a liability in the outfield. He's a $1 million bench player at this point.

Sosa as part of a platoon in RF playing only against LHP is certainly a great story. The one year farewell tour would make next year's WS championship even better. But not at 7 million.

The dilemna for Sosa is that money= respect and playing for what teams would offer would make him look foolish- or make him look like he should just retire.

I wish this nonsense would go away. He signed a minor league contract for a hill of beans and a couple bubble gum wrappers last year, obviously his ego isnt too big to do that.

I love Sammy Sosa, but this quote doesn't sit too well with me.

"It was devastating when manager Ron Washington called me into his office and told me they were going to cut back my playing time," he said. "My reaction was to go home and quit."

And he's crazy if he thinks he's going to get 7 million to play next year. He'll be lucky to get half of that.

And this negates him now saying it's $7 million or bust after a distinctly mediocre year?

I didn't say that. I was just pointing out that he had taken considerable pay-cuts before so obviously he is at least (or was) willing to do so.

Right, but he went into last year with that attitude...now he's starting off completely different. Clearly, he thinks he "proved" something worth $7 million dollars.

He'll be lucky if he gets 2.

You really didn't think he was a selfish, me first kinda guy before reading that quote?
