I'll commence to run around screaming now.

A question for people who act like this is no big deal - why is it when we trade utter crap pitchers for one month, we don't get 3 prospects back, including guys of Moore's and Renshaw's age/level/numbers? In fact, why don't most teams who aren't dealing with Hendry (or Brian Sabean)?

People dumping on Scott Moore kind of annoy me too. I know when we're trading crap we don't get guys back his age at his level with his numbers.

I was hoping he was going to be the second baseman of the future. (Yes, I know he was at third)

We've gotten one or two before. Adam Harben is somebody who springs to mind from a minor August deal.

That may be true, but even 3 bums off the street for Trax would be pushing it.

3 actual prospects for him is insane. I don't think there was a single person on this site who could figure out why this deal was even made in the first place.

How come everyone on the planet knows it's insanity from the outset but Hendry still can't figure out he's been raped even months afterwards?

Answer me that.

The only thing I can possibly think of is to clear 40 man space from players they didn't want anymore anyway and didn't have much trade value (Moore had some, Cherry probably didn't have much at all) but throwing Renshaw in even hurts that argument. It was a bad deal no matter what, and it's hard to say if it was a bad deal or an absolutely horrific deal. I would lean towards bad because I don't think the players the Cubs gave up are going to turn out to be much in the major leagues, and the 40 man space did help a little bit. Renshaw does start to push it towards absolutely horrific though.

Yeah, I'm pretty steamed about this one. But at the same time, it's like..........this is just par for the course, you know?

What was so good about Harben? I thought the Twins DFAed a guy with a lot better numbers... Alexander Smit, didn't the Reds pick him up?

11th best Twins prospect in 2005 and 2006. Can top out at 97, above average slider, decent change with good mechanics. His numbers had some shaky indicators in it, but he still projected well with his stuff. He was at least of good as a prospect as Moore was at the times each were traded.

I don't know anything about him, just his numbers don't look particularly good. I don't see Harben's name on any of the Top 10 Twins' prospects lists of the time either.

But the problem with that scenario is that Moore is better than when we traded for him.

I was talking about when the Cubs traded Moore, that Moore in late 2007 and Harben in late 2006 were comparable prospects, and Harben was probably seen as slightly better.

The numbers don't look like it, and the Baseball America Prospect Handbook doesn't seem to back that theory up either.

You're looking at Moore in the middle of 2006, not the Moore who was traded a few months ago. I would rather have Harben though I don't care for either.

You want a good trade for spare parts the Cubs actually made? How about Todd Walker for Jose Ceda.

Posted

Yeah, Todd Walker for Jose Ceda was good. And Michael Barrett for Kyler Burke was good too, cause everyone knew we had to move Barrett. Or how about Freddie Bynum for Kevin Hart. Pretty shrewd moves in my opinion.

I hated trading Jerry Blevins for Jason Kendall, and trading Renshaw for Traschel, but Jim has made some really good moves too. Jim is far from being the worst GM.

I am far from the worst looking human on the planet, but that doesn't mean much either. I'm not really upset about this trade that much. More than likely, none of the players mentioned in this thread will be more than spare parts let alone difference makers. THAT IS WHAT BOTHERS ME. Hendry is the master of:

A) Get the guy in a salary dump (Aramis, Kendall, Lee).

B) Trade spare parts for spare parts. He may get taken, but really how bad can it get?

C) Overpaying for mediocre free agents, especially middle relievers.

He's shown nothing to warrent his continued employment as a GM. At best the Cubs have been decidedly medicore during his tenure. At worst, they've been horrible.
