I'm suprised that nobody has mentioned Randy Hundley despite the fact that he was a Cub, Hundley was one of the better catchers of his era. Wasn't he named to a couple of All-Star teams? What was his nickname?
He was only an All-Star once (1969); he received MVP votes twice (22nd in 1967, 30th in 1969). His nickname was The Rebel.

I'd like to have seen how good he could have been if he didn't get injured, or if he came along later when surgical techniques were much improved. Same with Gale Sayers in football.

How much footage do they have on Josh Gibson, I'd like to see him play.

I'm a rabid fan of old school baseball and have seen footage of all types of players, including some rare footage of Honus Wagner and those types. But the only place I've ever seen any footage at all of Gibson is a few frames from his Baseball Hall of Fame video:

The thing is we can objectively compare them if wanted to. Is it easy? No. Is it possible? Absolutely.

but the problem is that there's really no way to do it fairly, especially on a board where people are not going to put hours and hours into making their list. Like you had a Japanese catcher on your list - is anyone else going to list that player? I doubt it. Some people don't know much about Josh Gibson, so they'll leave him off or rank him in an arbitrary spot on their list.

Like I said, players like Josh Gibson certainly bear mention in a thread like this, and feel free to say where you think he SHOULD be ranked, but the foreign/Negro League players are not included.

Just consider it Pat Robertson's dream contest ;)

Nothing from the Burns story about the Negro Leagues? I really enjoy watching a good catcher play.

Just glad to see some of you giving Thurman some credit! Better defensive catcher than Fisk. Better Average hitteras well. What a great rivalry that was!! I amnot sure Thurman deserves tobe top 10 all-time, but definately top 15. His career post-season statrs are sick!! He hit .529 in the 76 series.
