Ken Davidoff writes "Three teams that Mariano Rivera can use for leverage Cubs. They could use an upgrade over Ryan Dempster, and Lou Piniella shares Yankees blood with Rivera".

--- As Davidoff points out certainly Mariano Rivera would be an upgrade over Ryan Dempster...yes that's true but so what? Anybody would be better than Dumpster. Maybe the Cubs could talk to Glendon Rusch about coming out of retirement. What are your thoughts? Do you think the Cubs will at least make an offer?

It's amazing how the above quote so quickly and decisively removes your post away from anything even close to resembling reality.

A lot of crap seems to be coming out of NY lately. Just because the Cubs are going to be sold, they seem to be the hot team for dumb rumors. That money is better spent elsewhere. Sign Woody to close.

Nice of you to show your maturity by using a demeaning nickname for a player that didn't have a bad year.

I think people need to re-read his post and notice that he was suggestion that Glendon Rusch would be a better option.

Glendon Rusch.

Seriously.

He said it.

If Rivera is willing to sign a one year deal, I would do it.

He still posted a low 3 era in the AL closing.

And Rivera had issued only 12 walks all year closing. And No, I don't want Kerry Wood closing until he can go a FULL-SEASON without getting hurt.

Oh, I saw that. I'm still in a state of disbelief over that. :D

There's no way Rivera would sign a 1 year deal, and if he did for some reaosn, he'd be looking at about 18M

Yes. He did. So that automatically means he was being serious. Absolutely no other option. I mean, he said his name. Please tell me you didn't miss the sarcasm in his post. Actually, tell me you did. So I can laugh at you.

I can't stop here. He was being facetious. Yes, he did say that Dempster was a piece of crap. And he was wrong. But when the next name brought up is Glendon Rusch, you know that he was almost definitely making fun of himself. Okay, I'm done.

Ryan Dempster is adequate. Not "elite" by any means, but he saved 28 of the 31 games we gave him to save. His ERA looks bad but it's seriously jacked up by a handful of "disaster" outings. Hell, it jumped a half point in his last game because he got lit up.

Regardless, if we need to make a change at closer next season we have plenty of in house options. Carlos Marmol could do it. If we bring him back Kerry Wood could probably do it. Howry could do it. Wuertz could do it. And so on.

The absolute last thing we need to spend money on this offseason is pitching. Our pen is already set, our rotation is already set. Spend every dime you have on offense.

You're being far, far, FAR too generous.

There are plenty of people here who legitimately seem to think Dempster is overall one of the worst relief pitchers possible.

That's a whole boat load of sass from the new guy.

Yeah, I suppose it is. I'm not looking to make any enemies here, just wanted to point out what, to me, was an obvious misread of OP's post.

And Mojo, I did concede that OP was wrong in his assessment of Dempster, but I when I hear Glendon Rusch's name, my sarcasm sensor goes through the damn roof.

If you stick around, you'll notice a lot of statements along those lines made in complete seriousness.

Agree 100%. And I think that because we have so many in-house options, we should definitely look to trade Dempster this offseason. Because of his "closer" label, he is likely the most valuable of our relievers, even though he is not the most talented.

Of course we all know that if he is traded within the NL central, he will dominate us for ten years.

I think Dempster is one of those names that the Cubs ought to quietly leak his name to assess his trade value. If someone is willing to give something of value for Dempster, or a package including Dempster, then go ahead and make the trade. In other words, I don't think he ought to be traded only as a salary dump.
