M's Guillen to opt out of contract?

Jose Guillen's agent says the Mariners right fielder probably will terminate his contract and become a free agent. "That's the way it's headed," Adam Katz said during a brief telephone conversation. The contract Guillen signed last Dec. 4, which paid him $5 million this past season, included a "mutual option" in 2008 worth $9 million, or a $500,000 buyout. -- Mariners.com

He certainly would look good in RF for the Cubs. I like Murton, but acquiring Guillen could make Murton available in a package deal for a SS (Tejada, Renteria, Furcal).

Wasn't there speculation that he was offered something like 3 year 10/year deal and turned it down? I like Guillen, but hes probably not going to be worth the improvement.

Is a 31 year old OF with "pretty good" stats worth substantially more than 9 million? I guess he's thinking he'll get a 2-3-4 year deal...but would he really get more than teh 9 mill his option is for?

The difference in production between Guillen and a full season of Murton is not worth the massive difference in their salaries.

let's just get andruw jones...

Better yet, let's stay as far away from Jones as possible.

Better yet, lets stay as far away from Andruw Jones AND trade Jacque Jones!

better yet let's sign Andruw Jones and trade Jacque Jones. THat would be a good move.

I'd be interested to hear why. I think he'll end up somewhere in 2003-2004 production for the next 3 years with an average defense before he starts a real decline. 800+ OPS out of CF is really good, but I don't think he'll be worth the long term commitment that he'll be certain to receive from someone. He certainly isn't really as bad as his 2007 campaign, but I don't think you can count on him as a consistant >20% HR/FB type of guy.

dang, I was hoping Carlos Guillen would opt out.

I think he's in line for a serious decline. He won't even be playing short for Detroit next year, he'll be at first.
