At the risk of sounding like Bambi, what's all that white stuff?

Sand.

It goes

Clay

Pipes

Sand

Pea gravel

Top soil

Grass

Out of curiosity, what purpose does the sand serve?

It helps the water to move from the ground to the pipes and cleans particulate matter that could clog the pipes from the water before going into the pipes.

However: the white stuff could very well be lime and not sand. Lime stabalizes the ph level of the soil if it is too acidic. Also I could be wrong about the exact order. Sand may go on top of pea gravel. It's been a while since I did heavy duty landscaping.

Why is it in the stands and bleachers? (Third pic down it looks like it is in the stands near foul ball guy's seat and in the aisle halfway between the visitor's bullpen and the dugout. The fourth pic looks like it is all over the ground int he bleachers.) Perhaps I'm seeing things.

They're putting down sod this morning.

When did they make the dirt around home plate a circle? It used to be straight on the edges and rounded in the back.

They are supposed to complete the project tomorrow, 2 weeks ahead of schedule.

Also, looks like we might have the luck of the Sod Master on our side now:

cubs.com[/url]"]Bossard has overseen playing surface improvements at other Major League ballparks, and has had quite a record. Five times out of the last seven years, the team whose field he has worked on has won the World Series.

"It's pure luck," Bossard said. "I can't say I'd like to see the Cubs do it next year, obviously being a Sox person, but I hope the Cubs are in there playing against us."

My guess would be...during this project.

Looks like you are correct judging by the before and after pictures. I didn't know if it was done during the season and I just didn't realize it. I like the circle look better.

I pointed out before in the thread that I thought I was the only person sick enough to notice this, but that's not all that's different. As is made obvious by the before and after pics now, the cutouts at 1B and 3B are different (smaller, more rounded), and the cutout down the first and third baselines are gone.

Oh, and those old-school on deck circles are gone.

I've been to a zillion games at Wrigley and watched a zillion more on TV, and I don't think I've ever noticed that there is more foul territory on the first base side than on the third base side. So weird that I've never noticed that before.

Looks good. Only thing missing is the checkerboard mow pattern... =P~

I wouldn't mind seeing the NLDS (plus more) logo on the field more than once every few years.

Those weren't on-deck circles, they're places for the coaches to hit fungos down onto so they don't wear out the grass during infield practice. Kinda upset they took them out because it gives a more old-timey feel to fields in my opinion.

they should have taken the "dirt path from home to the mound" idea to it's logical extreme, making paths to 2nd, shortstop and all 3 OF positions

Ah, my bad.

Either way, don't mind the new look myself. It'll look even better once they put the chaulk lines and mow-patterns in.

It'll look even better on April 5, when there are players on the field and my son turns 21 and buys me a beer at the Cubs-Astros game.
