I did not see a potential playoff roster topic and I had to post this Sullivan article because it once again shows how big of a dope he is.

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/09/playoff-roster-.html

Hey Paul, you are the beat writer for the team, here's an idea, actually put some thought about your article before you post it. Seriously, Murton has started almost every game lately and he completely forgets him? The comments ripping him after the article are also pretty funny. When you are a condescending smart ass I guess you can't expect to be cut much slack when you make an obvious mistake.

Anyway, my guess at this point would be:

Zambrano

Lilly

Hill

Marquis

Dempster

Howry

Marmol

Wood

Wuertz

Eyre

Ohman (only because it seems they would want two LH relievers)

Kendall

Soto

Theriot

Lee

DeRosa

Fontenot

Ramirez

Soriano

Jones

Monroe

Floyd

Murton

Ward

Pie

I think Hart, and not Ohman gets on.

Yeah, I think Hart gets in over Ohman but I'm not as sure about it as I was before. I think the rest looks about right, II.

The way Lou has talked about Hart, Id be pretty surprised if he wasnt on. Hell Lou has already basically penciled him onto the 25 man for next year

I think Cedeno makes it over Fontenot - need a back up SS.

Is Hart eligible? - wasn't he a sept callup

Yes, because of a rule change.

The same rule change makes Soto eligible.

Posted
I thought Soto was automatically eligible because he had been called up at some point in the season prior to Sept. 1.

Nah I think its been changed to anybody who has been with that organization all year can be on the roster.

I think Hart makes it as well. I think Monroe makes it, but I have no idea why. He's terrible.

Yea, i would put in Hart over Ohman, Cedeno over Fontenot (backup SS and has been hot in limited appearances).

I do NOT want Monroe on the roster, although I think he will be on. I would put on Fuld. He and Pie can be the pinch-runners and defensive replacements. By adding Soto we get one more pinch-hitter, so I think we could add Fuld and still have enough people on the bench.

Huh?

Noway you have 2 guys on the roster for defensive purposes only. Fuld wont, and shouldnt be on the roster.

Woops  I fixed it in my original post. I figure that Fuld will not be on, and Monroe will. Although, we would have enough pinch hitters to survive. Ward, Soto, Murton, Cedeno/Fontenot. How many times do you need more than 4 pinch hitters in one game?

If Soto isnt starting he wont be used as a pinch hitter it would leave us with no catchers if Kendall gets hurt.

Cubs catchers have pinch-hit 17 times this year (Koyie Hill 5, Blanco 4, Barrett 4, Kendall 2, Bowen 1, Soto 1) and have been double-switched a few other times. Lou isn't nearly as concerned as some other managers about using his second catcher. He still doesn't usually use it as the first option, but he won't hesitate to use the catcher, especially if the catcher is a good hitter (look at Barret's 4 pinch-hit appearances in just over 2 months even though he didn't sit out all that many games).

How many of those have came when we were carrying 3 catchers?

Are you suggesting we carry 3 catchers?

Not at all

Am I correct in thinking that we can have one 25 man roster for the NLDS, and a different one in the NLCS? In other words, if Lou wanted to could he leave Kendall off of the NLDS and put him on the NLCS roster? My only reasoning for asking this is in case we play a team that runs a lot, Kendall is basically worthless.

It's hard to say without looking at each game log. Considering the Cubs have only carried 3 catchers for 24 days this year (2 days in July and 22 days in September) I'd say not many of them.

I don't see how Pie can be considered "on the bubble." There's no reason to start him, but he's very valuable as a pinch runner for the base cloggers in the late innings, and he's also a necessary defensive replacement for floyd/murton when the Cubs have a lead. They've been using him just about every game down the stretch; why would that change if they get to the playoffs?

That's not why he's eligible.

At midnight on August 31st, all players on the 25-man roster and the DL (Guzman, Novoa, Pagan, Prior) are eligible for the playoff roster. Any player still on the DL (15-day or 60-day) at the end of the regular season can be replaced on the 25-man playoff roster by another player who was in the system on August 31st at midnight (he can be in the minors and not even on the 40-man roster but he has to be in the system).

Formerly, a player who was replacing a DLed position player had to be a position player and a pitcher had to replace a pitcher but that rule changed this season.

Yes, that's right.
