If the cubs win the division but have a worse record than the wild card, do they play the 2 seed or the 1 seed in the first round? Also, what is the home field format for the playoffs? (First round 2-2-1 or 2-1-1-1, LCS and World Series 2-3-2 or 2-2-1-1-1)

Thanks in advance.

From what I understand, the wild card team does not play the division winner from their very same division.

After that, it confuses me how they actually determine the playoff match ups.

2-2-1, 2-3-2

If the Cubs win the division, they will not be seeded lower than three. Currently, they would match up against the D-Backs in the first round, I believe, as the Padres are the wild card and two opponents from the same division cannot play in the first round.

are you sure about the 2 opponents from the same division cannot play each other?

i thought i remember reading somewhere that when the wild card comes from the division with the best record...then those teams can't play

other than that scenario, i think everything is fair game

You can't play a team from your own division in the DS.

Normally the #1 seed plays the wild card and the #2 seed plays the #3 seed. If the wild card is in the same division as the #1 seed then it's the wild card vs. the #2 seed and the #1 seed vs. #3 seed. That's exactly what happened in 2003, when the wild card (Marlins) were in the same division as the #1 seed (Braves). That's why the Cubs played the Braves in the first round rather than the Giants, who they otherwise would have based on seeding. And, of course, that worked out well for the lower seeded teams that year (the lowest seeded team won every series in the NL postseason).

The #1 record plays the wild card, unless the wild card team is from their own division. If that's the case, the #1 division winner plays the #3 division winner.

you're saying the same thing. If the wild card comes from the division of the "best record team", they don't play each other.

If the wild card is not from the same division as the "best record team", they play the "best record team" thus not playing a team in their own division.

chucky the padres of course have a better chance of making the playoffs because they'll end their season with 4 straight wins vs the brewers.

That's going to be an interesting series. I don't want to match up with San Diego in the first round, so hopefully the Cubs can lock up 1st place and then we can turn around and root for Milwaukee.

yea... we'd be screwed in a 3 games series with SD - Peavy, Young, Maddux... we'd likely be swept
