I didn't see this posted, sorry if it was:

Ryan Dempster was unavailable to close Wednesday's game due to severe dehydration caused by the flu.

Dempster needed two IVs on Wednesday due to the dehydration. He is expected to be back for Friday's game against Pittsburgh.

It was in the game thread last night...at least that he was sick...didn't know the severity of it though

Hmm...I've had the flu but I never needed an IV.
It's an efficient hydration method that many people with the flu would benefit from. When I'm sick and dehydrated, I don't have the stomach capacity to sufficiently rehydrate from drinking fluids. It doesn't mean his flu was so much worse that having an IV indicates the severity, it just means he happens to make millions in an industry that spends millions on medical care.

I trust his flu had progressed to the point where he was no longer contagious. Otherwise I don't want him sitting with the rest of bullpen getting them sick too.

For the record (if there was one), Dempster did not have "the flu" - influenza. Influenza hasn't made it to the US yet. So while he could certainly spread some other (stomach?) virus, we're unlikely to see a long term loss of bullpen mates from a debilitating influenza virus.

What are all the flu shots for then?

erm... influenza is endemic in thiis country. You can get it at any time of year. It doesn't migrate from canada for the winter.

Influenza is a seasonal epidemic, occurring in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter months. It does not hide in Canada, but rather moves from Northern to Southern hemispheres. Influenza infection does not generally occur outside of seasonal outbreaks. The changes in the virus yearly necessitate the yearly changes in the influenza vaccine - and the necessary receipt of the vaccine yearly. The strains for this Northern Hemisphere season are based on what it being seen elsewhere in the world. Influenza epidemics occur in November - February.
