Tribune put the team and historic Wrigley Field on the block in April, saying it would sell the team after the season and intended to do so by the end of the year. But its bankers have yet to send out detailed financial information to prospective bidders and are not expected to do so until mid-September, jeopardizing that timetable.

A source familiar with the sale process said there's no chance of the sale being completed this year, with a more realistic target now baseball's opening day in spring 2008.

Pretty much what I figured. Don't look for the Cubs to do anything this offseason. 2008 is going to be a crappy year.

The only thing they can really do is add a RF'er. There aren't that many moves to make.

Not necessarily. It will be a lot like this year because most of the roster is locked up. We might not be much better, but fortunately the division shouldn't be a lot better either.

Well, that sucks, but:

Z has had a down year

Hill has been inconsistent

ARam's power numbers are down

Lee's power numbers are way down

Sori's power numbers are way down

Floyd's power numbers have been way down

Normally healthy Sori has been injured

Lee seems to still be recovering from his wrist injury

Assuming nearly the same roster next year, how many of these relatively anomalous things are likely to repeat themselves? A few perhaps, but not all of them.

I'm not ready to write off 2008 because of this news, if only because the above and that the division will still stink.

I think its the Brewers division to win next year. Considering their best players are under 26 years old.

Hopefully the Cubs can unload some contracts - Jacque, Eyre, maybe Dempster - and with the Barrett/Kendall money coming off the books they should be able to do something.

I don't think they'll be completely handcuffed in the offseason.

I, for one, hope we aren't able to make a lot of moves. Then maybe we will be forced to see what exactly our farm system can contribute. Learn to rely on that a bit more, and we may see a bunch of money open up for another position by 09.
