For no decisions Cubs starters(Z, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Marshall) 4.45 ERA

1.84 ERA in wins.

7.39 in losses.

Now that Trachsel's line is in the books, the updated ERA on the Cubs' quality starts this year is 1.78. It was only the third quality start this year for the Cubs in which a pitcher has met only the minimum requirement (6 innings and no more than 3 earned runs). Given the Cubs' record, the overall ERA in quality starts and the record when they don't get one, I'd say the quality start, although not perfect, is a pretty good measuring stick.

so what do we make of all this? i say that this shows that qs is a reasonable proxy for how well a pitcher has done, but then so is wins and losses. both qs and w-l will usually get the general picture right, but will also have some major blind spots, with w-l's blind spots likely being more significant. in the end, there's probably not much reason to use either stat since we have access to much better metrics.

anyone else have an alternative analysis?

I agree - esp with your last sentence about having better metrics to use.

Warning Track Power

god i hate it when Alfonso Soriano posts

fixed

that was hilarious.

The thing is, I think he has everyone else on ignore so he doesn't see this kind of stuff.

One complaint I have about Jacque in CF is that he takes really questionable routes to balls hit towards the gap. It might not kill this team by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a nitpick when I see him coming in, then running back to the wall when the ball scoots past his route.

Maybe like Raisin said it's just because he is coming out of the bullpen, but I did not know that Hart threw a 95 mile per hour fastball.

He was 87-92-ish at Tenn and Iowa.

Thanks, Tree.

Considering he was acquired for Freddy Bynum, any positive production we get out of him is more than Bynum ever did for this team.

I wonder how the Cubs will spend there last day in first place?

Look at the schedule coming up for all 3 teams. It was pretty easy to predict that the Brewers and Cardinals would make up ground this week, and by the same token the Cubs should have the advantage for the last couple weeks of the season.

Wow, very impressive outing for Hart. Especially considering it was his first ML appearance. Way to go!

He's no Rick Ankiel

Except we kind of tend to stink against those teams we should be beating easily.

The Dodgers have just been hitting the ball right and left all night, off of everyone. Good showing by them. Too bad the Cubs did not show up.
