hopefully Shark keeps it up and I'm glad to see Vitters has a day off. He needs to hit the cage big time tomorrow.

Ehh, it really doesn't matter - Mesa has one more game left in their season. Instructs will be good for Josh.

By the way, Tennessee is facing Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati's top pitching prospect (besides Homer Bailey).

oh I forgot it's almost September

Is Vitters going to start next year at Boise?

I would think so.

By the way, I've read a lot of comments that the Cubs would like to see Vitters get up to Boise (they finish a week after Mesa and they have a chance at the playoffs too). I think the Cubs will change their mind on that given how Vitters struggled in Mesa.

He supposedly hasn't played since June which hopefully explains a lot of his struggles.

What would be the possible benefit of getting him a week in Boise.

Maybe it is the same theory they had with Shark. Heck, it couldn't hurt anything to give him a week at Boise. If he did well, it would give him a boost going into next year. If he did poorly, they would just say he is rusty and he will be ready next year.

I don't know, I didn't see a benefit before he was struggling in Mesa.

Vitters supposedly to Boise, game tongight can be seen on www2.fiberpipe.net/hawks/2007/default.asp

Can you say "reckless promotion?"

The difference between Boise and Mesa isn't that big a deal. The more time he gets to play, the more likely he'll get his swing back. I will say I am surprised, given how much he struggled.

Along with Vitters, RHP Hung-Wen Chen (a $200,000 bonus kid from Taiwan), RHP Simon Lee (Korean native), RHP Marcus Hatley (2006 DFE) and OF Cliff Andersen are headed to Boise frmo Mesa.

Meh, another HR off Samardzija in AA - that's 8 in 27.1 innings. His groundball % has dropped big time from the mid-50s at all his previous levels the past two seasons to 37% at AA.

3 scoreless innings for Robert Hernandez so far. :)

Samardzija gets another QS at Tennessee (he has 4 in 5 starts).

7 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 K/0 BB, HBP, HR, 11 GO-8 FO.

Hernandez is probably done - despite some poor control, he gave up no runs: 5 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 K/3 BB.

I'm guessing Samardzija is done - if so, he's got another QS at Tennessee (he has 4 in 5 starts).

6 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 K/0 BB, HBP, HR, 9 GO-7 FO.

Hernandez is probably done but he threw 5 scoreless innings (struggled with his control walking 3 and only striking out 1).

Samardzija is apparently not done yet.

7 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 K/0 BB, HBP, HR, 11 GO-8 FO

Wow, Hernandez throws 4 pitches in the 6th inning, getting a foul out on the first pitch, a ground out on the third pitch and a ground out on the fourth pitch. Wow.

6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 K/3 BB, 6 GO-11 FO, 85 pitches.

Neither Andersen nor Vitters are in Boise's lineup, sounds like they haven't made it up from Mesa in time.

Colvin hits his 8th homer with Tennessee. That's more HRs than walks with Tennessee (8 vs. 5) and overall (15 vs. 14).

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Come Back for 8-2 Win

Win on the Field and Forfeit Give Cubs Two Wins in a Day

By Deene Ehlis / http://www.iowacubs.com

Four Iowa pitchers were in and out of trouble all night as the Cubs downed Memphis 3-1 Wednesday night at Autozone Park. The Redbirds left fourteen men on base, including eight in scoring position.

Iowa scored the game's first run in the third inning as Eric Patterson doubled, stole third and scored on Josh Kroeger's sacrifice fly. Matt Craig delivered a two-run double in the eighth inning to up the Cubs lead to 3-0. The Redbirds loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with nobody out, but settled for one run on a sac fly by Tagg Bozied. Ben Howard picked up his second save of the season by recording the last two outs.

Les Walrond earned the win, his eleventh against five losses. Mike Parisi suffered the loss, he's now 8-12.

Patterson finished three for four on the night with two doubles and his twenty-second stolen base. Patterson also had three stolen bases Tuesday in Memphis and explains the increase in steals, "I've definitely been running more...I've been focusing on getting out there and getting a good lead and that's helped my confidence as far as stealing bases." Patterson is also adjusting to playing the outfield, "I've still got some work to do. Being an infielder my whole life, I'm working on some throwing mechanics, trying to lengthen my arm a little bit and get more carry on the ball."

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies drop series to Lookouts in 5-4 loss

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies could have used a win against Chattanooga tonight to further enhance their playoff positioning, but fell just short in a 5-4 loss in front of 3,014 fans at Smokies Park. With the loss, the Smokies dropped to 34-31 for the second half of the season, and 1-½ games behind Huntsville in the North Division for the 2nd half title.

For the third time in five games, the Lookouts jumped on top of the Smokies in the first inning, this time scoring two runs to take the early lead. Jeff Samardzija (3-2) surrendered a two-run home run to Adam Rosales, then worked out of the rest of the inning to keep the score 2-0. Chattanooga plated another run in the top of the third after Drew Anderson reached first on a fielding error by Kyle Reynolds, and advanced to second on an odd play. Samardzija, believing the play was dead, lobbed the ball into the dugout. Time had not officially been called, so Anderson was awarded second base with the ball entering the dugout. Anderson later scored on an RBI single by Danny Dorn to give Chattanooga a 3-0 advantage.

The never say die Smokies stayed in the game by scoring a run of their own in the third as Chris Robinson scored on an sacrifice fly by Sam Fuld off Lookouts started Johnny Cueto (5-3). Tennessee closed to within one run in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a mammoth home run by Tyler Colvin, his eighth of the season. Samardzija settled down after a somewhat rough start to pitch seven solid innings, giving up three runs while striking out two batters.

Matt Avery came on for Samardzija in relief in the eighth and ran into trouble. With two out in the inning, Avery gave up a two-run double to Shaun Cumberland to give Chattanooga a 5-2 lead. With the situation looking bleak for Tennessee, the Smokies offense came through once again. In the bottom of the eighth, Nate Spears led the inning off with a double, and later scored on a fielder’s choice to pull the Smokies to within two runs of the lead. Casey McGehee, who walked earlier in the inning, then scored on a fielder’s choice as well to cut the lead to 5-4. But with Jemel Spearman on third base, Robinson struck out to end the threat. Josh Roenicke came on to pitch a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the year, as the Smokies never posed a real threat in the ninth.

The Smokies take to the road to face the Carolina Mudcats in a pivotal playoff series beginning on Thursday night August 30th through Labor Day Monday September 3rd.

Brown Shuts Down Daytona

By: Dan Watson

[PORT ST. LUCIE, FL] Eric Brown continued a sparkling month of August, tossing seven shutout innings to lead the first-place St. Lucie Mets past the Daytona Cubs, 11-0. Daytona fell silent late in the game, with just one hit after the third inning.

Brown gave up just five hits and a walk while striking out six. He improved to 4-1 in the month of August. The right-hander pitched through some early struggles, allowing all five hits in the first three frames. Brown advanced to 10-8 with the victory.

His counterpart, Joel Santo, was coming off a solid performance in his last start, but he struggled with his command. Santo gave up eight runs on seven hits and five walks.

The St. Lucie assault was anchored by Dan Murphy, who doubled three times, scored twice and drove in three runs. Sean McCraw piled up four RBIs, belting his first home run of the season with St. Lucie.

Walked haunted Santo in the third inning as he loaded the bases on three free passes. Then, Murphy ripped a double down the right-field line to plate Emmanuel Garcia and Hector Pellot to make it 2-0 Mets. Ambiorix Concepcion lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Nick Evans. McCraw followed with an RBI single to right to chase Murphy home, and the Mets led, 4-0.

St. Lucie erupted for four more runs in the fifth inning. Evans blasted a solo home run to left to start the inning to make it 5-0. Murphy doubled and Concepcion singled to put two on, and McCraw drove them both home with a three-run home run to right to push the lead to 8-0.

St. Lucie scored a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Concepcion against Chuck Platt. Murphy's third double of the night plated a run in the eighth, and an RBI groundout by Concepcion finished the scoring at 11-0. The final two runs were plated against Tim Layden.

The Cubs' struggled at Tradition Field continued, as they fell to 2-14 in Port St. Lucie over the past two seasons. Overall, the Cubs dropped to 24-41.

St. Lucie ensured it would keep a two-game lead in the FSL East, improving to 35-30.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Beat Kane County 5-0

Peoria, IL- Robert Hernandez pitched six shut out innings and won his second straight start as the Peoria Chiefs earned a series split with a 5-0 win over the visiting Kane County Cougars on Wednesday night. The win coupled with a Cedar Rapids win keeps the Chiefs a game back of the Kernels in the Wild Card race.

Hernandez picked up his seventh win of the season by going six innings and allowing just four hits while striking out one. Hernandez had a four pitch inning for his final inning of work in the sixth. Reliever Casey Lambert pitched two scoreless innings and struck out one. Matt Maradeo pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the Chiefs 13th shut out of the season.

The Peoria Chiefs offense picked up right where they left off the night before in the first inning against Kane County starter James Heuser. Ty Wright led the game off with a base hit and moved to third on a Darwin Barney single to right. Jim Adduci delivered an RBI double to score Wright to make it 1-0. Marquez Smith grounded out to short to score Barney and give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs offense struck again in the fourth inning after back-to-back walks to Russ Canzler and Derek Schermerhorn to start the frame. Matt Canepa came through with a single up the middle to score Canzler and extend the lead to 3-0. Brian Leclerc extended the lead to 4-0 with an infield single off the glove of the third basemen that allowed Adduci to score.

Peoria got another run in the sixth inning after Heuser walked Schermerhorn to start the inning and end his night. Reliever Scott Moore came in and gave up a single to Leclerc that moved Schermerhorn to third with one no outs. With two outs, Moore almost got out of the inning without a run but Larry Cobb did not field a Wright ground ball cleanly and Schermerhorn scored to make it 5-0.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Games: Robert Hernandez (SP) - Hernandez went six shut out innings and allowed just four hits. He picked up his seventh win of the season and his second on the Chiefs six game homestand.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 5 games remaining, the Chiefs are a game back in the Wild Card race behind Cedar Rapids who beat Beloit Wednesday, and 5.5 games behind Quad Cities who were tied 0-0 with Burlington in the divisional race. Kane County is now 2 behind Cedar Rapids and Burlington is 6 ½ games out. The Chiefs have three games (at home) against Cedar Rapids and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton.
