USA Today recently proclaimed the Boston Red Sox America's team in a front-page article about their rabid fan base and national following.

Whether Red Sox Nation is bigger or more fervent than Cubs Nation is a debate that could draw some heated arguments.

Cubs reliever Bob Howry, who played in Boston in 2002-03, says there's no comparison, because Cubs fans are there in good times and bad.

"Their fans wouldn't show up if they were losing like we were last year," he said, referring to the 3.12 million attendance figure for a 96-loss Cubs team.

I hate to play the East Coast bias card, but I fear it's at play here. Cub Nation is much larger, imo.

I agree w/ Howry - the Sox just won a WS after 90+ years with several near- misses. Suddenly Sox fans are coming out of the wood work (just like White Sox fans in Chicago - suddenly everywhere you turned there was a black hat on someone's head - and they probably couldn't even have named 7 of the starting players for the team that won the WS).

It's easy to be a fan of a team that competes every year, makes the playoffs almost every year, won a championship just a couple years ago (in dramatic fashion) and is pitted against the "Evil Empire." It's another thing to be...well...one of us.

There are a lot of Red Sox fans in the ESPN area and they will always get the main coverage along with the Yanks because of this. The people from that area are also very arrogant and think they are the most unique things in the world when they certainly are not. I would love to see this team lose 90 games a season 3 years in a row and then see how "supported" they would be.

It's just going to be that much sweeter when one day we win the World Series. I just hope its in my lifetime (age 47).

Maybe America's Team shouldn't have fans who support the team/ownership through the good and bad. America is about the bottom line and the bottom line is winning for the fans.

Howry thinks the fan that charged him on the mound earlier this year was just coming out to give him a big hug.

He didn't look like he was going to attack him.

He came out and ask him, "What the **** are you doing?" He wasn't going to harm Bobby, but it is still one of the most mentally slow things to do.

America loves the underdog. 99 years and counting makes us an incredible underdog-in myth.

America lovers the underdog when they win, but they soon forget about them and go back to covering the powerhouses. Hence why the Yankees are on ESPN 24/7.

If they consider the Yankees a powerhouse because of the amount of WS titles they've won, then they should be covering St. Louis more than they do because they are #2 in titles.

I think that St. Louis doesn't get as much coverage because they're not an east coast team. The media loves the east coast.

Fixed.

I firmly believe that if ESPN weren't based out of Bristol, there wouldn't be as much a focus on the Red Sox/Yankees. Fox at least does a decent job of showcasing teams regionally.

Can you imagine if ESPN did that with Sunday Night Baseball? Maybe more people would be interested in teams nationwide. And we wouldn't have to deal with Joe Morgan in every broadcast.

A step in the right direction is to showcase on ESPN every team at least once. That, too me, is intriguing because how often would I be able to watch some of these nonshowcased time? I understand ratings drive these sort of things, but hey, I'd sacrifice seeing the Yankees for instance if it was a game against a small market club that gets no air time.

I don't dispute the east coast bias, but to suggest that the discrepancy is only or primarily because of the east coast bias is pretty silly.

The Yankees have more history - or at least more publicized history - than other other team in baseball, by far. They have more than twice as many titles as St. Louis - it's not even close. They play in the biggest and most metropolitan city in America. And, at least for the last several years, they have been very, very good, almost to the point where they're considered favorites to win the whole thing, every single year. They have a loudmouthed, opinionated owner with deep pockets who's entertaining to watch.

There really is no comparison, and it's understandable, if lamentable, that the Yankees get more coverage than other teams, regardless of east coast bias.

All that said, I'm all for wresting the seat of sports nation from the east coast.
