The Smokies can really help themselves by beating Chattanooga, since Chattanooga catching Huntsville is the only way the Smokies won't make it.

i've got to learn to stop saying good things about people while they are still playing, Papelbon had a rough 7th but still a great start and the offense picked him up the next half inning.

Final line

7.0IP, 6H, 2ER, 10K/0BB, 1HR

Harvey? He's not on the MiLB.com roster - that'd be interesting if he was going. Certainly wouldn't sound like the Cubs are disappointed in him if that were the case.

MiLB.com has all former Chiefs along with Fuld and Lansford - Matt Avery, Justin Berg, Grant Johnson, Rocky Roquet and Joe Simokaitis.

IowaCubs.com"]Memphis Rallies to Defeat Cubs 10-8

By Deene Ehlis / http://www.iowacubs.com

Memphis scored the games final eight runs to overcome an 8-2 deficit and defeat Iowa 10-8 Monday night at Autozone Park.

Matt Craig got the Cubs off to a good start with a first inning grandslam, the team's eighth of the year. Scott Moore hit a solo homer in the fourth and Geovany Soto added a three run shot in the fifth to give the Cubs an 8-2 lead.

Memphis then did all of the scoring the rest of the way. After scoring one run in the fifth on a doubleplay, the Redbirds tallied five runs in the sixth. Tagg Bozied doubled in two runs, Nick Stavinoha had an RBI single and Brian Barden tied the game with a two-run homer.

Memphis snapped the 8-8 tie with two runs in the eighth. Danny Ardoin doubled in the go-ahead run and a second run scored on the play after a Ronny Cedeno error. With the win, Memphis, now 55-82, still owns the worst record in the league. The Redbirds, though, lead the season series with Iowa 9-4.

Iowa Manager Buddy Bailey blamed the teams pitching for the loss, "Let's be honest, we just didn't pitch good...we just make too many mistakes against this club. We've played them enough now that we shouldn't be giving up eight, nine, ten runs a ballgame."

Soto finished the game one for four, the homer, with three RBI. Soto is now hitting .357 with 106 RBI, leading the league in both categories.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies snap losing streak with 7-3 win

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies solidified their playoff hopes tonight with a convincing 7-3 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts at Smokies Park. The Smokies benefited from a strong outing by pitcher Donnie Veal, and home runs by both Tyler Colvin and Kyle Reynolds to snap a six game losing streak in front of 3,099 excited fans. With the win, the Smokies eliminated Chattanooga from the wild card race, but have not sewn up the 2nd half title as of yet.

Chattanooga jumped on top of the Smokies early on in the game again tonight. A double off the bat of Drew Anderson scored a run for the Lookouts followed by a two-run single by Craig Tatum gave Chattanooga a 3-0 advantage in the top half of the second inning. Tennessee was able to cut into the three run lead in the bottom half of the inning however, thanks in part to Tyler Colvin’s solo home run, his seventh of the season with Tennessee.

Veal (7-10) settled in after a rough second inning to retire the next twelve batters he faced. The Smokies offense also helped out Veal with some timely hitting to take the lead in the bottom half of the fourth. Colvin, who went 3 for 4 on the night, led off the inning with a single off Lookouts starter Sam Lecure (7-5) and then scored on a Kyle Reynolds RBI double. Reynolds advanced to third on a throwing error on the play, and was brought home by an RBI single by catcher Chris Robinson to tie the game at 3-3. The Smokies took the lead thanks to Veal’s bat, who drove in his first run of the season with an RBI single to give the Smokies a 4-3 advantage.

The Smokies never looked back, as Veal continued to mow down Lookout batters through 7 2/3 innings. Tennessee scored two more runs in the fifth on Reynolds’ eighth home run of the season, and added another run in the sixth thanks to a Jorge Cortes RBI double to extend the lead to 7-3 in favor of the Smokies. Matt Avery came on to pitch the final 1 2/3 innings to preserve the win for Tennessee.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Daytona Tops Vero Beach in Rubber Match

Cubs Rally Late in 4-3 Victory

By: Matt Martinez (Darin Downs photo/Tommy Proctor)

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] On the final Belly Buster Monday of the 2007 season, stomachs were left content and hopes were left fulfilled as the Cubs plated three runs in the eighth inning to come back against the Devil Rays, 4-3.

Adalberto Mendez took the ball for the home Cubs and things looked dire in the early stages of the game. Mendez relinquished two runs on three base hits to swing early momentum to the visiting D-Rays.

Daytona battled back in the home half and scored a run on an RBI single off the bat of Steve Clevenger to halve the lead to 2-1.

From there on, Mendez cruised. He handily took care of Vero Beach batters as he threw four scoreless innings before being replaced by 2007 draftee Scott Meyer. Meyer tossed two scoreless of his own until he handed things over to Donnie Walters.

Walters side-stepped danger in the top of the eighth and left unscathed, but the Cubs' bats had fallen silent as well and the game remained 2-1 in the Rays favor.

The bottom of the eighth would prove to be what the Cubs were waiting for. Matt Matulia ripped a one-out single and Clevenger walked on four pitches. Matulia stole third as Mark Reed pinch ran for Clevenger and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two men in scoring position and two outs, Ryan Harvey advanced to the bat. Harvey hit a laser beam down the left field line that scored both runners and sent him to second with a stand-up double and gave the Cubs their first lead of the day. But the lead was uncomfortably close and Daytona needed some insurance. Jeffrey Rea skied a high fly ball into left field and the Devil Rays' lines of communication went down momentarily as the left-fielder and shortstop collided. The ball hit the grass and Harvey scored as Rea stood on third with an RBI triple. The Cubs left the frame with a 4-2 lead.

The Rays made it interesting in the top of the ninth as Walters stayed on to try and close out the game. But Jackson Brennan unloaded a solo home run with one out to bring the game within a run. Walters retired the next batter but gave up a rocket single to Aaron Sisk to put the tying run aboard for the Rays' cleanup batter Sergio Pedroza. Manager Jody Davis called for the southpaw to face the left-handed Pedroza. Darin Downs took the bump in the most desperate of situations and performed beautifully. Downs retired Pedroza on a ground ball and the Cubs walked away with not only a one-run victory but a series victory over the Devil Rays.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Now Tied For Wild Card Spot After 4-2 Win

Peoria, IL- Jeremy Papelbon struck out a career and the Peoria Chiefs season high 10 batters over 7 1/3 innings en route to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Beloit Snappers on Monday evening at O’Brien Field. The Chiefs improve to 35-28 and ties them with Cedar Rapids for the Wild Card sport in the Western Division.

Papelbon allowed six hits and two runs over his 7 1/3 innings of work as he picked up his eighth win of the season. Alex Maestri worked the final 1 2/3 and allowed a hit and struck out two while picking ups his 10th save in 11 chances.

Peoria broke a scoreless tie against Beloit starter Jesus Carnevales in the fourth inning. Jim Adduci started the inning with a line drive single into right field. Marquez Smith hit his third home run in 12 games since joining the Chiefs to make it a 2-0 game. Russ Canzler and Wellington Castillo followed with back-to-back singles to give the Chiefs four straight hits in the inning. Carnevales fired an attempted pick off throw into center field that allowed Canzler and Castillo to move up to second and third. After Derek Schermerhorn was hit by a pitch in the foot, Leclerc grounded out to the pitcher but Canzler scored from third to make it 3-0. A failed suicide squeeze attempt by Nate Samson against reliever Dan Leatherman got Castillo tagged out at the plate before Samson struck out to end the inning.

The Chiefs got a lead off double for the second time in the game in the fifth inning, this time by Ty Wright off Leatherman. Darwin Barney followed with a solid single into center field to put runners on the corners with no outs. Adduci flew out to left field and Barney broke for third base which made Ty Wright break for the plate where he was thrown out after a perfect relay throw from the second basemen to get Wright at the plate.

Beloit took advantage of the only mistake on the night by Papelbon in the seventh inning. Chris Parmelee singled into right after two men were out and Matt Betsill homered on the first pitch he saw out to left field to cut the Chiefs lead to one at 3-2.

Peoria got one of the runs back against reliever Jose Lugo in the bottom of the seventh. Wright led the inning off with a single but was erased on a double play ball off the bat of Darwin Barney. Addcui drew a two out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Smith picked up an insurance run with an RBI single to right to score Adduci for the final run of the game by Chiefs to make it 4-2.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Games: Jeremy Papelbon (SP)- Papelbon tossed a career high 7 1/3 innings while striking out a career high and Chiefs season high 10 batters. Papelbon improves his record as a starter to 4-3 and has worked seven innings or more in three of his last four starts.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 7 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card race, 4 games behind Quad Cities who beat Cedar Rapids 6-3. The Chiefs are now tied with Cedar Rapids in the Wild Card race. Kane County is now 1 behind Cedar Rapids and Burlington is 5 ½ games out. The Chiefs have two games (at home) left against Kane County, three games (at home) against Cedar Rapids and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton.

BoiseHawks.com"]Hawks Stay Close with 7-5 Win

YAKIMA, WA --The Boise Hawks remained one game out of first place in the Eastern Division of the Northwest League with a 7-5 win over the Yakima Bears.

Tony Thomas led off the game for Boise with a single and went to third on an error. Brandon Guyer drove in Thomas with a ground out and the Hawks had a 1-0 lead.

Yakima scored twice in the fourth to take the lead and added one more in the sixth.

The Hawks scored twice in the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk and a hit batter to tie the score. They got three more in the eighth inning on a doubles by Kyler Burke and Drew Rundle and a clutch two-out two-run single by Tony Thomas on a 3-2 pitch. Burke then brought another run home in the ninth inning with a sacrifice fly.

Michael Bunton started for the Hawks and gave up two runs on six hits in four innings of work. Jordan Latham got the win with three innings of work and John Muller got his second save of the season with two innings of work.

The Mesa box score says that rehabing RHP Adam Harben started in CF and batted second but that's actually OF Clark Hardman.
