We will start Siegfried today...Alburquerque is done.

Shoulder, elbow, or manager is just tired of his ineffective pitching and wants to start somebody who gives the Chiefs a chance to win?

How has Siegfried and Lambert looked? Both have had some really nice box-score nights, and some others that aren't good. If Siegfried's control comes around a little bit, does he have a shot to be a good big-league reliever?

One more Q on those two: Is Siegried a normal delivery, or does he throw some sidearm? Same for Lambert.

Posted

Al told the staff last night he was hurt.

Both have regular deliveries.

I think we will throw four guys 2-3 innings each today and then see where we stand.

Given Alburquerque's injury history, I sure hope it's nothing too severe. :?

well they can figure that out in Mesa...no one else thought he was even hurt he was scheduled to start today until he said no about 10 pm last night.

Josh Vitters is in the Mesa lineup DHing. His first pro AB resulted in a strikeout. 14th rounder James Russell - who got 4th round money to sign with the Cubs - also is making his pro debut and has thrown two scoreless and hitless innings with 2 strikeouts.

Vitters ended up going 0/3 with 2 K (one looking, one swinging), a groundout and an RBI sac fly. Russell: 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 K/0 BB.

Colvin's having a great month so far.

.346/.352/.577/.929 in August

0 BBs of course lol

*sigh*

That's just not sustainable. Maybe we can trade him.

Also, for the sake of being in a state of Cubbie depression, what is Soto's BABIP Vs a sustainable rate. i.e. what can we actually expect from him next year (his fourth in AAA, or his first as the back-up in MLB ball.)

He's got an overall BABIP of .415 (don't know what a sustainable rate would be) and he can't stay in AAA next season.

neither of those statements are good. (unless the Cubs are prepared to let him start or take over the back up role next year.)

Mark Pawelek did indeed walk 2 batters and hit 3 more in 2.1 innings of work.

Cedric Redmond is the another teenager at Mesa to put together a good K/BB ratio (26 K/6 BB), just like Oswaldo Martinez (22 K/2 BB) and Harol Tolentino (27 K/10 BB).

Steve Clevenger has a 10 BB : 3 K ratio. Insane.

No clue. Hunter Pence?

Anyway, I fail to see the lesson. Player ? has a MUCH better IsoD.

Until Colvin learns to take walks, I won't really be able to take him seriously.

IowaCubs.com"]Mather Homers Past Iowa

Memphis breaks tie in 10th inning

By Andrea Breen / Iowa Cubs

Joe Mather bashed a two-run home run in the tenth inning to send the Memphis Redbirds past the Iowa Cubs 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park.

Prior to Mather's hit, the only scoring took place in the first and second innings. Memphis scored in the first inning on a Mather RBI single and Tony Richie tied the game 1-1 with a home run in the second inning. The score remained tied at one until Mather's homer topped Iowa for the win.

Carlos Rojas added two hits in the loss.

Iowa starting pitcher Sean Gallagher threw five innings and allowed just one run on five hits, but did not factor in the decision.

Memphis' Brain Falkneborg (2-4) picked up the win and Ben Howard (6-7) was tagged with the loss for Iowa.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]BayBears hungry in 6-1 win over Tennessee

MOBILE, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears plated six unanswered runs en route to 6-1 win over Tennessee Tuesday night, snapping the Smokies five-game winning streak at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Tennessee scored first with one in the top of the first inning. Casey McGehee singled in Jemel Spearman.

Trailing 1-0, Mobile evened the score in the third inning. Wilkin Castillo grounded out to score the run.

The Bears took the lead in the fourth on a two-out run Aaron Cunningham single. The home team then followed with a four run seventh. They sent nine to the plate, which was highlighted by Cesar Nicolas launching a bases loaded double to right, scoring two. Teammate Chris Rahl added a sacrifice fly to bring home a third run.

Mark Holliman pitched five and two-thirds innings for Tennessee, yielding two runs on eight hits in the loss. Esmerling Vazquez went six and one-thirds for the BayBears, earning his 10th win of the year. Vazquez allowed six hits and one run with four strikeouts.

Tennessee still owns an eleven game lead over Chattanooga for the North division wildcard spot (if Huntsville wins the second half) and remain only one game back of the Stars for first with thirteen games remaining.

Every Starter Cracks A Base Hit in Victory

By: Dan Watson

[JUPITER, FL] The Daytona Cubs shored up their offensive output to outslug the Jupiter Hammerheads, 11-7, Tuesday at Roger Dean Stadium. Jeffrey Rea led the onslaught for Daytona with a 4-for-4 performance. He scored twice, drove in a pair of runs and stole a base.

Rea was part of an impressive barrage by the entire Daytona offense. Daytona pounded out 14 hits as a team. Ryan Harvey was the only other Cub with a multi-hit game; he went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Jupiter out-hit the Cubs, 16-14.

Daytona again touched up Jupiter starter Jim Brauer. The right-hander, who recently returned from the disabled list, gave up seven runs in 5.1 innings to fall to 0-5. Three of Brauer's five losses this year have come against the Cubs.

The Cubs took an early lead in the top of the second with timely hitting. Brian Dopirak started the inning with a double down the right-field line. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on Jeffrey Rea's two-out single to make it 1-0.

Daytona kept it going with a pair of runs in each of the next two innings. Matt Camp doubled to start a third-inning rally, stole third and scored easily when Mark Reed followed with a triple. Steve Clevenger's sacrifice fly allowed Reed to score, and Daytona led, 3-0.

Harvey doubled with one out in the fourth and moved to third on Rea's infield single. Andrew Lopez yanked a two-run double down the line in left to give the Cubs a 5-0 advantage.

Jupiter got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Gaby Sanchez, J.T. Restko and Kevin Randel hit consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out. John Purdom's sacrifice fly plated Sanchez, and Jonathan Fulton's single to left chased Restko home to cut the Daytona lead to 5-2.

The Hammerheads kept it going in the fifth. Kris Harvey stroked a leadoff double, went to third on a groundout and scored when Restko dumped a single into right to cut it to 5-3.

The Cubs struck for the knockout blow when they sent nine men to the plate in the top of the sixth. Ryan Harvey and Rea hit back-to-back singles to chase Brauer from the mound. Reliver Jacob Marceaux's first pitch hit Lopez to load the bases. An RBI groundout by Jonathan Mota extended the lead to 6-3. Camp walked to load the bases, and Reed followed with another walk to make it a 7-3 tally. Clevenger chopped a bases-loaded single into center to drive in a pair and the lead ballooned to 9-3.

Jonathan Fulton made a small dent in the lead in the bottom of the sixth when he hit a towering homer to left field, but Paul Schappert held things there to exit the game with a 9-4 lead through six innings.

The Daytona southpaw allowed the four unearned runs and scattered eleven hits without a walk or a strikeout to improve to 2-0.

Jupiter made it interesting in the late innings. The Hammerheads scored a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth, when they cut the lead to 9-7 and put the tying run in scoring position. Scott Koerber held things right there to end the eighth.

The Cubs tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Harvey roped an RBI double to left-center, then Rea stroked a run-scoring single to finish the scoring at 11-7.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Lose Wild Card Lead in Extras

Grand Chute, WI– The Peoria Chiefs tried to sneak the go-ahead run past Wisconsin in the top of the 10th before losing 5-4 Tuesday night to the Timber Rattlers. The loss, coupled with a Cedar Rapids win drops the Chiefs into a tie for the Wild Card spot with 13 games remaining.

Leon Johnson led off the Chiefs 10th with a walk and stole second after Ty Wright struck out. Darwin Barney then lifted a flyball to the wall in center and Chiefs manager Ryne Sandberg tried to surprise Wisconsin by sending Johnson all the way from second to the plate. But centerfielder Calvin Beamon’s throw to cutoff man Juan Diaz was online and Diaz’s relay to the plate was in time to get Johnson in a close play. Johnson slid in head first and injured his shoulder on the play.

Brian Leclerc replaced Johnson in center to start the bottom of the 10th and couldn’t get to a bloop hit by Kuo Hui Lo to start the inning. The ball bounced away from Leclerc and Lo got into second with a hustle double. Alex Liddi showed bunt and all the Chiefs infielders were on the move with the wheel play on. Liddi pulled the bat back and singled up the middle as Lo easily beat Leclerc’s throw home to win the game 5-4 for Wisconsin .

The game moved into the third inning scoreless until Wisconsin got on the board against Chiefs starter Chris Siegfried. Leury Bonilla, who drove in four runs on Monday, led off with a double to right and moved to third on a groundout. Beamon grounded one to first but Bonilla beat the throw home to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.

Peoria was able to get to Rattlers starter Tony Butler in the fourth inning. With one out, Jim Adduci walked and Russ Canzler singled to left. The duo pulled off a double steal and Adduci scored to tie the game on a groundout by Derrek Schermerhorn. Marquez Smith put the Chiefs on top with a mammoth two-run homer to left, his first of the season in Peoria . The homer, the second of the series for the power-challenged Chiefs, put Peoria up 3-1.

The game stayed 3-1 into the sixth before Wisconsin put runs on the board against the Chiefs bullpen. Michael Bartek relieved Matt Maradeo in the sixth and got two quick outs before walking Lo on four pitches. Lo stole second and scored easily on a single to right by Liddi.

Wisconsin tied the game and took a lead without a hit against Casey Lambert in the seventh. After retiring the first batter, Lambert walked three straight Rattlers to load the bases. Juan Beltran hit a chopper that Lambert deflected to second as all runners were safe and Bonilla scored to tie the game. Ron Garth followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Juan Diaz and give Wisconsin a 4-3 lead.

Canzler led off the Chiefs ninth with a double to center off Rattlers reliever Justin Souza. Pinch hitter Blake Lalli flew out to deep center as Canzler moved to third. Smith tied the game with a single up the middle as Canzler scored easily. Matt Canepa followed with a single and Smith moved to third as the go-ahead run. Nate Samson hit a grounder to second as Wisconsin forced Canepa at second base for out number two. Samson appeared to beat the relay throw as Smith scored, but base umpire Bronson Martinez called Samson out as the game remained tied.

Siegfried allowed one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings while strikeout out three in his first professional start. Maradeo threw 2 2/3 hitless innings while striking out one. Bartek allowed one run, one hit and one walk in 2/3 of an inning. Lambert blew his first save after walking three and giving up two runs without a hit over 2 1/3 innings. Ruhlman takes a tough loss allowing three hits and one run in the 9th and 10th innings.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Marquez Smith (3B) – Smith hit a two run homer to break a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning and then singled to tie the game in the ninth. He also walked and finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 13 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card spot, 4 ½ games behind Quad Cities who lost twice on Tuesday. The Chiefs are now tied for the Wild Card lead with Cedar Rapids in the Wild Card race. Kane County is 2 games back and Burlington 3 ½. The Chiefs have two games (at home) left against Kane County , three games (at home) against Cedar Rapids and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton.

BoiseHawks.com"]Hawks Fall to Canadians, 4-3

VANCOUVER, B.C. --The Vancouver Canadians rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth inning and beat the Boise Hawks Tuesday night, 4-3.

The Hawks came back from a 3-0 deficit after the starter Mark Pawelek allowed three runs in the first two innings on two walks and three hit batters and one hit.

Mario Mercedes started a two-run rally with a lead off base hit in the third, one of his two hits on the night. Mark Sawyer doubled him home and Sawyer scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Wyatt. Wyatt then led off the sixth inning with a double and scored on Josh Donaldson's base hit. Donaldson had two hits on the night.

The score stayed tied until the Canadians won it in the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and one out Dan Hamblin's ground ball was booted by Jovan Rosa at third base and the winning run scored. The Hawks remain one and half games behind the Spokane Indians who also also lost.

Is it me or is it odd that for Gallagher he walked 5 but had still had 61 strikes on 94 pitches. So for the 5 guys he walked there is 20 balls. Only 13 balls remain for the 15 outs. Did he walk all those guys on 4 straight or something, and the rest predominately get all strikes.
