Time for a good outing from Hernandez, he needs one.

I think he's starting to tire out as the season winds down...75 innings is quite a bit.

6 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 K/1 BB.

He's got a 1.50 ERA in 12 AA innings. Still not striking a lot of guys out, but he's doing better.

He's out to pitch the 7th inning for the second time all season.

Samardzija's 7th inning:

4-pitch walk.

Strike 3 swinging on a full count!

Single to RF on a hit and run. Runners at the corners.

6.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 K/2 BB, 5 GO-11 FO

That's it for Samardzija. The runners at the corners are his responsibility.

Henderson comes in and gets a DP to get out of it!

Samardzija's final line: 6.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 K/2 BB, 5 GO-11 FO. I believe his AA ERA is down to 1.46.

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Win 4th Straight Sunday

Iowa Victorious 7-4 in Oklahoma Sunday

By Deene Ehlis / http://www.iowacubs.com

Iowa won their fourth straight game, downing Oklahoma 7-4 Sunday afternoon at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. With eight wins in their last ten games, Iowa moves within four games of Nashville in the American North. The Sounds play Sunday night at home against Albuquerque.

Buck Coats led Iowa's twelve hit attack with three hits and one RBI. Cubs manager Buddy Bailey praised Coats' effort, "He doesn't feel real comfortable at the plate and when that happens you've got to find a way to get a hit here or there."

Iowa catcher Geovany Soto went two-for-four to improve his average to .354. He drove in two runs with a double as he began the day leading the league in slugging and was second in average. Manager Bailey also had words of praise for Soto, "He's definitely going to be the all-star catcher...you don't see that production every day from a guy behind the plate, and he's a good defensive catcher. It's a big plus for our organization, the kind of year he's having."

Juan Mateo went six innings for the win Sunday, improving to 2-3. Clay Rapada pitched the ninth for his 17th save. The game ended when Desi Relaford hit into a bases loaded double play, started by thirdbaseman Matt Craig. Manager Bailey explains the game ending D.P., "The situation dictated we were guarding the lines. If it hadn't been that situation, the ball gets down the line...Craig made a really nice play." Craig also had two hits and two RBI.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Samardzija sharp, Smokies win 5-2

Sevierville, TN – Jeff Samardzija came to the mound for his second start at Smokies Park tonight, pitching 6 1/3 innings of four hit ball to lead the Smokies to a 5-2 victory over the visiting West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx. A crowd of 2,925 looked on as Samardzija (2-0) gave up two home runs, but battled through to allow only two runs to score. The victory was the third in a row for the Smokies, who took four out of five games from West Tennessee in improving to 27-23 for the second half of the season.

It looked to be the same old song and dance for the Smokies, as West Tennessee scored a run in the first inning for the fourth consecutive game. Diamond Jaxx second baseman Luis Valbuena launched a towering home run off Samardzija to put the Smokies in a 1-0 hole early on. The Smokies answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first however, with Jorge Cortes scoring on throwing error by Valbuena, one of four Diamond Jaxx errors on the night. After one complete inning, the game was tied at 1-1.

The Smokies took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, thanks in part to a one-out double by catcher Chris Robinson, one of his two hits on the night. Robinson later scored on a Robinson Chirinos RBI single, followed by Chirinos scoring on an error to give Tennessee a 3-1 advantage.

After the Diamond Jaxx scored to pull within one run on a Marshall Hubbard home run in the fourth, the Smokies plated another run in their half of the fourth to push the lead back to two runs. Issmael Salas led off the fourth with a double down the left field line, and advanced to third on a bunt single by Robinson. Salas later scored on a fielder’s choice by Chirinos off of Diamond Jaxx starter Andy Baldwin (3-12), and the Smokies had a 4-2 lead.

That would be as close as West Tennessee would get, as Samardzija and the Smokies bullpen took over from there. After leaving the game in the seventh, Samardzija was aided by a great effort from reliever Jim Henderson. After the Smokies scored an insurance run in the eighth to make the score 5-2, Rocky Roquet came on to pitch in the ninth. Roquet proceeded to strike out the side in order to end the game for his sixth save of the season.

Santo Throws Hitless Baseball Through Five, Walks Eight

By: Matt Martinez

(CLEARWATER, FL) Despite not allowing a single hit until midway through the fifth inning, Joel Santo took a loss in Clearwater as the Threshers took advantage of walks and errors on their way to a 6-2 win.

Santo had a peculiar line, allowing five unearned runs on only one hit, while walking eight and striking out two. Clearwater manufactured a run in the fourth inning on an RBI groudout by John Urick to take a 1-0 lead. The Threshers added five more in the sixth after Santo recorded two quick outs. The rally was extended when P.J. Antoniato hit a sharp grounder to Billy Mottram with the bases loaded. Mottram fielded it cleanly but overthrew Brian Dopirak at first and two men came in to score. Scott Taylor came on in relief of Santo and allowed back-to-back hits to clear the bases and leave the score, 6-0 Threshers.

The Cubs battled back in the sixth as Jake Muyco scored on an RBI groundout by Matt Matulia to close the gap to 6-1. And in the ninth, Andrew Lopez got his first hit as a Daytona Cub, a towering home run to left-center field to make the score 6-2. The rally ended there and the Cubs dropped their second in a row.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Win Again, 5-2

Geneva, IL – The Peoria Chiefs pitchers dominated the Kane County Cougars again on Sunday afternoon for an important 5-2 victory and a sweep of the two game series in the Chicago suburbs. The win puts the Chiefs 3 ½ games clear of the Cougars in the Wild Card race before the two teams square off at O’Brien Field Monday night.

The Chiefs took advantage of a wild Henry Rodriguez on the mound in the top of the first. Leon Johnson was hit by a pitch to start the game and with Darwin Barney batting he stole second and third. After a strikeout, Jim Adduci hit a grounder to short and Johnson was thrown out at the plate for the second out. Adduci stole second and moved to third on an infield single by Derek Schermerhorn. Blake Lali gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a solid single into left as Adduci scored and Schermerhorn was thrown out at third to end the inning.

Robert Hernandez allowed a walk and a double with one out in the first inning. The 18 year old recovered with back to back popouts to get out of the inning with the Chiefs on top. After the first inning double, Hernandez retired the last 14 batters he faced in the game.

The Chiefs still led 1-0 into the fifth inning when they got to Rodriguez again. Ryne Malone singled, Nate Samson walked and each moved up 90 feet on a sac bunt from Johnson. Barney put the Chiefs up 2-0 with a hard hit groundout to second as Malone scored. Samson was caught trying to steal home to end the inning.

Two innings later the Chiefs knocked Rodriguez from the game with a two-out rally. Malone started the rally with a single to left and Samson singled to center. Johnson followed with a walk to load the bases for Barney. Eric Sheridan relieved Rodriguez and gave up a RBI single to Barney on the first he threw for a 3-0 Chiefs lead. Sheridan then struck out Adduci to leave the bases loaded.

Peoria picked up an unearned run in the eighth against Sheridan to push the lead to 4-0. Schermerhorn popped up to start the inning but second baseman Larry Cobb dropped it in the outfield grass. After back to back walks loaded the bases, Malone delivered a sacrifice fly to deep center as Schermerhorn scored without a throw.

The Chiefs put the game away in the ninth against reliever Andrew Carignan. Johnson walked and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw. Barney reached on another error and with one out, Schermerhorn singled to right for a 5-0 Chiefs lead. Kane County avoided the shutout with a harmless two-run Greg Dowling homer with two outs in the ninth.

Hernandez stops a personal three game slide with five shutout innings in which he allowed just one hit. The righthander is now 5-8 after walking one and striking out three. Casey Lambert threw two shutout innings in which he allowed one hit and struck out five. Jayson Ruhlman set the Cougars down in order in his lone inning with one punch out. Alex Maestri allowed two runs on two hits and two strikeouts in the ninth.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game : Robert Hernandez (SP) – Hernandez retired the last 14 batters he face as he threw a one-hitter over five innings. The only two batters to reach against him came on a walk and double in the first inning.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 21 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card spot, 1 ½ game behind Quad Cities who won in 10 innings on a walk off homer Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs are now 3 ½ games up on Kane County in the Wild Card race. The Chiefs have five games (four at home) left against Kane County and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton.

BoiseHawks.com"]Volcanoes Beat Hawks, 8-5

KEIZER, OR -- The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes beat the Boise Hawks Sunday night, 8-5. The Volcanoes scored five runs in the eighth inning to complete a come-from-behind victory.

The Hawks got home runs from Kyler Burke (7), Marquez Smith (4) and Josh Donaldson (7).

Jonathan Wyatt had a base hit in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, the longest hitting streak in Northwest League this season.
