I didn't have a good feeling heading into this series. I think this may end in a sweep or at best a 1/3. That said, I'm still not worried as we get a bunch of NLC to beat up on after this.

Probably for the best. I generally listen to Pat and Ron anyway, even while on the TV on Fox or ESPN.

Maine is going to devestate the cobs. Soriano w/3 k's, Ramirez w/2, even Lee will strikeout twice. This does not look good.

Yeah, the only time I won't listen to them is when it's WGN with Len and Bob.

Game Notes.

COMEBACK EFFORTS FALL SHORT: The Cubs continue their series with the Mets after dropping the opener yesterday, 6-2 … Chicago came back twice, evening the score at 1-1 with a Derrek Lee sixth inning homer then tying the score at 2-2 with a Jason Kendall 2-out, seventh inning double to plate Mark DeRosa … the Mets scored 4 in the ninth to put the game away.

Chicago is sporting the National League’s top record since June 3 (35-20/.636), while the Yankees top the majors (36-20/.643) … Colorado is the closest N.L. team with a 30-22 mark (.577) in that span.

Chicago is 8-2-1 in its last 11 series dating to June 22-24 at the White Sox … that includes a 4-1-1 home series mark.

With the Brewers defeating Philadelphia last night, 2-1, the Cubs are 1.0-game back of Milwuakee for the top spot in the N.L. Central … Chicago is 1.0-game of the Padres in the N.L. Wildcard race.

GIVING A LITTLE EXTRA: Of Derrek Lee’s last 9 hits dating to July 26, 8 have gone for extra bases … he has 4 doubles and 4 home runs in that span … his second-inning homer July 15 vs. Houston snapped a 126 at-bat homerless streak that began on June 3 and started a run that has seen Lee belt homers in 6 of his last 50 at-bats (8.3 at-bats per home run).

Prior to his second inning homer July 15, Lee had homered once every 52.8 at-bats this season (6 home runs in 317 at-bats).

WORKING WITH MEN ON BASE: Chicago’s pitchers have allowed runners on base in 40 of their last 45 innings of work over the club’s on the current homestand … conversely, the Cubs have had runners reach safely in 31 of 44 innings at the plate this week.

Working with runners on base has upped the workload for Chicago’s pitchers … the club’s 851 pitches thrown since July 30 lead the majors and translate to nearly 20 pitches per inning (19.1) on this homestand.

PUT AWAY THE SHADES: Today’s game marks the Cubs final day contest before starting a string of 7 straight night games, tying the club’s season high done June 7-13 … Sunday’s game vs. New York has been picked up by ESPN so the start time has been moved from 1:20 p.m. to 7:05 p.m.

The run of night games concludes with a 2:05 p.m. CT game Sunday, August 12 in Colorado.

More from the game notes....

RACKING UP THE TWO-BAGGERS: The Cubs have collected 14 doubles over their last 3 games including a season-high 6 doubles Wednesday night vs. Philadelphia … Derrek Lee’s 32 doubles rank tied for seventh in the N.L. on the season while teammate Alfonso Soriano ranks ninth with 31 doubles.

Chicago has 227 doubles (third in the N.L.) and is on pace to hit 340 doubles this season – the 1931 Cubs hold the franchise’s single-season record with 340 doubles in 156 games.

LOOKING TO STRETCH OUT THE STARTS: Chicago’s starting pitchers have reached the seventh inning just once in the club’s last 9 games –that was when Carlos Zambrano, tossed 7.1 shutout innings July 29 in Cincinnati … on the current homestand, Cubs starters have lasted 5.0 or fewer innings in 4 of 5 games.

On the season, Cubs starting pitchers have tossed 650.0 innings, eighth-most in the N.L.

The Cubs bullpen has tossed 14.2 innings over the team’s last 3 games … earlier this season, the ‘pen threw 14.2 innings over a 3-game stretch, June 9-11.

RECENTLY AGAINST RIGHTHANDERS: Entering today’s game, the Cubs have faced right-handed starters in 14 of their last 16 contests … opposing right-handed starters are 2-8 with a 4.60 ERA (37 ER/72.1 IP) in their last 14 games against Chicago dating to July 18.

Chicago is 20-7 (.741) in its last 26 games against right-handed starters dating to June 23.

REMARKABLE ROTATION: Chicago’s starting pitchers have a .595 winning percentage this season (44-30), tops in the N.L. and third in the majors behind Detroit (47-29/.619) and Boston (54-35/.607) … Cubs starters have not lost consecutive games since June 16-17 vs. San Diego when Carlos Zambrano and Rich Hill were the Cubs’ pitchers of record.

Chicago is sporting the National League’s top record since June 3 (35-20/.636) … Colorado is the closest N.L. team with a 30-22 mark (.577) in that span.

I'm just happy my FOX affiliate is showing this game.

Just put it on mute. Buck & McCarver are calling the game.

Looks like I'll have to finish up my Podcasts.

I think we're in trouble this weekend.

Yes. Big trouble. I'm just hoping the the Phils win the next two games. So at worst we are only 1 game back.

Yikes no Murton again?

What does he have to do? I mean how long before Floyd is recognized as the bench player he truly is?
