According to the Daily Herald, there's a good chance that John McDonough and Steve Stone could be in the front office of the Cubs:

Regardless of which group winds up buying the Cubs — but especially in light of who's considered the frontrunner — it seems nearly certain that team president John McDonough will be somewhere in the Cubs' front office next year. Maybe even in the same chair he occupies today. Private-equity legend John Canning, of Chicago's Madison Dearborn Partners fame, has put together a roster of superstar partners such as Andy McKenna, Patrick Ryan, Rich Melman, Larry Levy, Michael Krasny, Ed Kaplan and Craig Duchossois, all billionaires or names that carry enough local clout to scare the daylights out of any other bidders. McDonough knows them all, and it would be illogical to make a change — or remove McDonough completely from the equation — considering McDonough's track record and their familiarity with him. -- Daily Herald

For those hoping to see a Steve Stone return to Wrigley Field perhaps in a front-office capacity, which constitutes a huge percentage of Cubs fans, all-world restaurateur Rich Melman's name has been linked with John Canning for months. Melman and Stone go back to the mid-'70s. "Richard and I have been partners for 33 years. That's true,'' Stone said Thursday. "But who knows how any of this will turn out? There will be crazy twists and turns, and you never know because there's a long way to go in the process. "I do know, having been through the process myself, that baseball likes local ownership and experience in the game, not first-time owners.'' Canning owns 11 percent of the Milwaukee Brewers, and his group is loaded with Chicago power brokers. On paper, it looks like the perfect sell. -- Daily Herald

Count me as not part of that huge percentage of Cubs fans who would want to see Stone in a front office capacity.

In the booth with Len, sure.

I'm not a fan of Stoney's philosophies.

hey that would be lovely...

i don't really care who it is as long as they have deep pockets and a keen understanding that a somewhat significant overhaul is needed throughout the entire organization...

So we've got speculation about McDonough, and then....I don't even know what to call the second one.

"One of the guys who could be owner has ties to a restaurant guy that's friends with Steve Stone". That = Steve Stone 4 Front Office?

Well, not really . . . I think Melman is going to actually BE an owner. And if he's friends with Stoney, then that could lead to a front office job.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of you guys - What's the main beef with Stone as a front office guy? I mean, is it SS as GM that you don't want to see, or are you equally scared of him as Asst GM (or even Assistant TO the GM?)?

I don't want Steve Stone involved in personnel decisions at any level.

Yeah, yeah, I get that you don't want him involved - but why?

Please keep Stone away from the Cubs.

If no one is willing to tell me WHY you are adamant that he not be in the front office, I'm going to assume it's because you simply don’t like the cut of his jib (or some other lame reason)!!

I clearly remember Stone saying that the Cubs should break the bank to sign Carlos Beltran.

I like that kind of philosophy.

Anytime I've heard Stone suggest a move or trade idea, it makes me cringe. He'd be Steve Phillips bad as a GM.

I don't want him making personnel decisions, because frankly I think he'd be bad at it. I think he'd be the type to find value in players like Darrin Erstad and Cesar Izturis and overpay them to boot.

While there may be some nostalgia attached to a return of Stone, I think the end result of Stone would be a very bad Cubs team on the field.

I think Steve Stone would have some value in the organization beyond broadcasting. He can teach our young power pitchers when to throw the slider, low and away.

I hope he can teach them when and how to throw a slider low and away.

He loved the trade of Maddux for Izturis. In fact, he was also all for the move of Cedeno to 2nd so that "Izturis and Cedeno can make a gold glove combo up the middle like Izturis and Alex Cora were in LA".

That is more of what we could expect with Stoney at the helm.

The main reason is the opinions he espoused as a TV guy and (especially) as a radio guy lead many people to believe he would be terrible at making decisions for a MLB team.

How can you tell? All he does is second guess and flip flop.

i remember hearing him say that izturis and cedeno are a middle infield that would be great for 10 years or something like that.

please keep stone out.

Wow, you guys had legit reasons for not wanting Stone in the front office?

I just don't like the cut of his jib.

What's a jib?
