Interesting OF for Iowa today:

Coats in LF

E-Patt in CF

Pie in RF

It's also Coats jersey t-shirt giveaway day. I want one!

Jennie Finch's husband Casey Daigle pitching for the mini d-backs.

Iowa needs Craig and Kroeger to come back. John Nelson sucks.

Ugh, Larry Suarez with a rough outing after a few positive ones. At least he had 3 K/0 BB in 4 innings.

Carlos Perez seems like a real intriguing prospect - he's repeating at Mesa but he's only 19 and hitting well for any position, let alone catcher.

Anyone listen to the Iowa broadcast? Did they mention why Epatt was in CF and Pie was in RF? Seems kind of strange.

I may have missed it, but is Oswaldo Martinez hurt? He was pitching regularly but hasn't thrown since July 16.

Yeah, I found it strange that he didn't pitch at all during the time I was out of town. It's tough to get news from Mesa but I have to think he's hurt.

IowaCubs.com"]Fox's Walk Off Slam Launches Cubs Over Tucson, 10-6

Iowa wins 10-6 in bottom of the ninth

By Andrea Breen / Iowa Cubs

Jake Fox's walk off grand slam launched the Iowa Cubs to a 10-6 win over the Tucson Sidewinders Thursday night at Principal Park.

The Sidewinders took their only lead of the game in the top of the ninth inning on Robby Hammock's RBI double which gave Tucson a 6-5 lead.

Joe Simokaitis led off Iowa's half of the ninth inning with a single and was driven in on a single by Felix Pie, tying the game 6-6. Carlos Rojas and Geovany Soto walked to load the bases before Fox hit Iowa's seventh grand slam of the season for the come-from-behind win.

Eric Patterson and Felix Pie were 3-for-5 in the win and John Nelson hit his fifth home run of the year for Iowa.

Clay Rapada earned the win for Iowa after allowing one run over 1.2 innings. Chad Harville took the loss for Tucson.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies new and old propel way to 5-3 win

Sevierville, TN – Justin Berg got just the solid starting pitcher effort the Smokies needed tonight, going seven innings while allowing only three runs as Tennessee took down the Montgomery Biscuits 5-3 at Smokies Park tonight. The Smokies improved to 22-19 for the second half of the season in front of 3,474 fans, including the 2,000,000th fan through the gates of Smokies Park since it’s opening in 2000. Tennessee benefited by timely hitting and pitching by both newly acquired and veteran Smokies players.

The Biscuits struck first against the Smokies and starting pitcher Justin Berg (5-7). After retiring the first two batters of the game, Berg was tagged with a home run off the bat of Montgomery’s Reid Brignac to give the Biscuits a 1-0 lead. The Smokies struck right back in the bottom half of the first to take the lead back. A leadoff single by Jemel Spearman got things going, who moved to third after Jorge Cortes reached on a throwing error. Casey McGehee then hit a long sacrifice fly to right field to score Spearman and tie the game at 1-1. Newly acquired Smokies infielder Kyle Reynolds then singled to score Cortes, and the Smokies had a 2-1 lead.

Montgomery tied the game up again at 2-2, thanks largely in part to an Aaron Sisk double. Sisk was brought home on a Patrick Breen single to tie the game. Both teams benefited from good pitching over the next several innings, with neither team scoring until the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Nate Spears led the inning off with a single. With one out, Spears stole second base and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the Biscuits catcher Matt Spring. With McGehee at the plate, Spears crossed home plate thanks to a wild pitch by Montgomery starter Wade Davis (4-2) to give the Smokies a 3-2 advantage.

Tennessee added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Reynolds, who went 2-4 on the night, smacked a double down the right field line to begin the inning. He later scored on a RBI single by another newly acquired Smokies, Alan Rick. Montgomery countered with a run of their own in the top half of the seventh, however, to pull to within 4-3 of the Smokies.

McGehee once again picked up the Smokies in the seventh to give Tennessee another two run cushion. His sacrifice fly scored Spearman for the second time tonight to give the Smokies a 5-3 lead. That would be all the bullpen would need, as Jim Henderson came on to face the final four batters for his tenth save of the season.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Santo, Harvey Lead Daytona to 6-2 Win

Harvey's Sixth-Inning Slam Fuels Cubs

By: Dan Watson

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] Joel Santo held the Jupiter Hammerheads scoreless through six innings. Then, the Daytona offense showed up. Ryan Harvey smoked a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to spark the Cubs' 6-2 win Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Billy Mottram and Steve Clevenger were both key contributors to the Daytona offense. Mottram went 2-for-3 with a double and a runs scored, while Clevenger had a 2-for-4 night and scored a run.

It was a pitcher's duel through most of the game between Santo and Jupiter's Derell McCall. The right-handers combined to keep the game scoreless through five innings. In the end, Santo outdueled McCall, pitching seven innings, allowing a run on three hits, walking three and striking out four. With the victory, Santo improved to 8-5. McCall was handed his first loss with Jupiter to drop to 3-1.

Santo worked out of trouble in the second inning as the Hammerheads loaded the bases with one out. Augustin Septimo ripped a liner toward short, but Jonathan Mota snagged it and doubled off the runner at second to end the inning.

The Cubs never moved a runner past second until the bottom of the sixth, when they cashed in on a two-out rally. McCall struck out the first two batters of the inning, but a single by Steve Clevenger and back-to-back walks to Brian Dopirak and Matt Matulia loaded the bases for Ryan Harvey. The former first-round pick smashed a laser beam over the wall in dead center field for a grand slam to put Daytona ahead, 4-0. The hit broke a 1-for-19 skid at the plate for Harvey.

Jupiter got on the board in the top of the seventh with a two-out home run of its own. Angel Molina, playing his first game of the year with the Hammerheads, ripped a solo homer to center to cut the Cubs' lead to 4-1.

Daytona got the run back in the seventh with some help from Hammerhead mistakes. Jake Muyco led off the inning with an infield single. Jeffrey Rea laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reliever Jeff Gogal couldn't get the ball out of his glove and Rea was safe on the error. Mota bunted the runners over, and a passed ball allowed Muyco to race home to make it 5-1 Daytona.

Jupiter got another solo homer in the eighth. John Purdom ripped a pinch-hit round-tripper to left field, his first of the season, to make it a 5-2 game.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Cubs again stretched the lead to a four-run margin. Billy Mottram and Yusuf Carter slapped back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Rea bounced a single into right field to plate Mottram and give the Cubs a 6-2 advantage.

Tim Layden and Yusdel Tuero combined to close it out for Daytona. Layden gave up a run in the eighth inning and Tuero delivered a scoreless ninth to end the game.

The Cubs improved to 17-23 with the win. Jupiter dropped to 17-19 in the second half.

The teams continue the three-game series Friday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on 4Ever Fitness Ladies Night. It is also "Kids Run the Bases" night, presented by Bubba Gump Shrimp Company and Dolly's Fun Toys.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Bats Quiet Again in 7-1 Loss

Comstock Park, MI – The Peoria Chiefs managed just a ninth inning run in a 7-1 loss Thursday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps. The loss, their third straight, drops the Chiefs to 23-16 on the half and pending the Quad Cities result in South Bend could drop the team out of the top playoff spot.

For the third game in a row, West Michigan jumped on the Chiefs right from the start. With one out in the first, Gorkys Hernandez picked up his fourth extra base hit of the series, a double to center. Peoria starter Robert Hernandez recorded a strikeout before Brennan Boesch doubled to right for a 1-0 Caps lead. Ryan Strieby followed with his team leading 14th homer of the season, a two run shot for a 3-0 West Michigan advantage.

The Whitecaps then added solo runs in the third and fourth innings. Scott Sizemore led off the home third with a ground rule double. With one out, he came around to score on a single up the middle by James Skelton. Chiefs centerfielder Leon Johnson then made an unbelievable all-out diving catch on the warning track in right-center for an inning ending 8-6-3 double play. Johnson received a standing ovation from the Whitecaps crowd as he ran in to the Chiefs dugout after the play.

West Michigan made it 5-0 in the fourth when Brandon Timm singled, stole second and scored on a Chiefs error. The Caps then scored again in the fifth when Skelton again singled in Hernandez for a 6-0 lead.

Trailing 7-0, the Chiefs finally scored in the ninth against reliever Zach Piccola. Brian Leclerc led off with a single and moved to second with two outs. Clark Hardman drove Leclerc home with a single into right field before Piccola retired Matt Canepa to end the game.

Hernandez takes his second straight loss allowing six runs, five earned, over five innings. The 18-year old did not issue a walk and gave up eight hits while striking out four. Matt Maradeo tossed two scoreless innings out of the Chiefs bullpen while striking out one. Michael Bartek allowed a run in the eighth on a hit, walk, wild pitch and sacrifice fly.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Clark Hardman (LF) – Hardman collected three of the Chiefs six hits on the night going 3-for-4 with the lone RBI. He now has three multi-hit games in a Peoria uniform and one 3-hit game.

Apologize in advance - I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere - but I'm pretty pleased to see Kyler Burke showing signs of life at Boise. An .864 OPS and .500 SLG% seem pretty good to me, considering how absolutely awful he was for the Padres' A affiliate. Looks like his LD% still stinks though (9%), but his IsoP is up massively (.216 with Boise compared to .057 with SD's A club).

And being in short-season A-ball is just fine since he's still only 19.

Ryan Harvey breaks a shutout in the Daytona game and gets back to the Mendoza line with a grand slam.

Thank goodness. He's still rapidly approaching Earl Cunningham-land.

I'd say he was already there but he hasn't bought a house yet.
