According to the Los Angeles Times, the Angels backed away from a potential trade for Mark Teixeira when the Rangers asked for a package in return that included Casey Kotchman, Joe Saunders and either Brandon Wood, Nick Adenhart, Howie Kendrick or Ervin Santana.

Instead, the Rangers have apparently settled on the Braves' package that centers around Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Elvis Andrus. "What we were being asked for was going to hurt us more than the deal would help," general Manager Bill Stoneman said. "We are looking at this season and setting ourselves up in the best position for getting in the postseason. We're not going to destroy our ability to compete for next year or future years just for a shot at now."

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers fell short of completing a Joe Blanton trade with the A's before talks halted Monday night.

A source said the Dodgers offered three top minor leaguers — two position players and one pitcher — but were not willing to go further. Further talks are possible, but a deal is unlikely. The A's want the one thing the Dodgers don't have: near-major league-ready starting pitching prospects. Andy LaRoche and Jonathan Meloan apparently aren't enough for Oakland.

SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Red Sox are leading the Yankees and Mets in a three-team race for Eric Gagne.

Newsday says it's close between the same three teams and the Brewers. The general opinion seems to be that Boston has the best offer on the table. However, that might not matter since their on Gagne's no-trade list. The Red Sox would likely have to make it worth his while for Gagne to accept a trade.

While the Mets, Dodgers and Diamondbacks have all inquired, there's little chance of Jon Garland being dealt Tuesday.

As a result, the Dodgers moved on to Joe Blanton. The White Sox are also expected to keep Javier Vazquez, and they're probably stuck with the struggling Jose Conteras.

The Tigers and Pirates are discussing a trade that would send Jack Wilson to Detroit.

Bad idea. The Tigers want a backup shortstop, but if they acquired Wilson, it'd almost certainly be with the idea of turning him into a regular next year. He's owed $6.5 million in 2008, $7.25 million in 2009 and then a $600,000 buyout of his 2010 option.

What is wrong with the Tigers? First they take Neifi, and now they're going after Jack Wilson. Terrible.

They would be better off with Jackie Wilson

My cousin, who lives in Detroit, just heard on sports talk radio there that the trade is done. I still haven't seen an official link though.

Pitt people have been saying the Izturis deal was done in order to facilitate moving Wilson, and while I applaud them for moving on from Wilson, I don't understand why they thought they need another ineffective expensive SS to make it work.

Jack Wilson just might be the ugliest dude to ever step foot on a baseball field.

David Weathers has to be up there

While there have been many unattractive men to play major league baseball, this discussion begins and ends with Willie McGee.

A few years ago I had a thread with ugly ball players. It's probably disappeared into the ether by now

Because they won't have to deal with Izturis after this year.

A while ago, some guys I work with and myself created a list of the ugliest people in each sport.

Willie McGee was the #1 overall ugly athlete.

That Sherrard dude from Duke was way up there too, but that's a different sport.

edit... Don Mossi was up there too, I think he was our #2 baseball player.
