You lost me on the Capt. Grit comment. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Please make a decent argument as to why what i said is a retorical comment.

I hereby withdraw my participation in this thread.

This is what happens when I don't sift through the 2 or 3 pages prior to a post that I respond to.

Riot is a good baserunner and surely his CS would still be relatively low, so the adjustment isn't that much.

At the very lest SLG would look like .480.

No I haven't crunched the numbers but if someone would like to, feel free.

You're off by a mile. Theriot has 119 TBs in 322 ABs. If we tack on 19 TBs, his SLG is still only .428. But if you take out his CS, his OBP drops from .351 to .337. So yeah, this strange OPS figure that you're using goes up, but not to .800, and his "slugging" is well short of .480.

When reading this thread (and considering arguing against Theriot's value), we should all keep in mind that a month or so ago, when asked to pick any 5 players in all of baseball with which to start a team (I think it was 5, somewhere in there), Theriot was 1 of MurtonFan's guys. I have to assume that for most people here, Theriot wouldn't even be 1 of the five Cubs you'd pick to start a team.

Just wanted to shed some light on what we're up against.

Well just as an exercise I'm going to figure out who I'd take from this team if I had to take into account age, contract and production.

ARam

Zambrano

Rich Hill

Marshall

Marmol

I guess Theriot doesn't make the cut, but he'd be in my next group with Murton, Wuertz, Lilly and maybe DeRosa.

Now if you're asking who are the five best players on the team, Theriot doesn't even come close.

I believe the original exercise took into account age, contract, etc, but I'm not sure if it was limited to guys on a 25-man roster or not. Certainly Theriot would be on some people's top 10 list of Cubs, but top 5 in the league?

Where the heck did this thread go?

Fontenot has done a decent job this year, far exceeding expectations. To expect him to keep this up may be asking for too much. We badly need an upgrade at either CF, RF, C, or SS at the deadline. I hope it doesnt bit us in the butt.

I will say, I enjoy watching (what my un-pc friend calls) the "Mighty Midget" play hard. GRINDER BALL RULEZ!

Please if you want to make sense don't make silly statements, My point is that they're scoring runs very well with Theriot stealing bases and without hitting doubles, triples and HR.

I know I'm a couple days late to this party, but are you seriously arguing that the Cubs are better off with Theriot hitting singles and stealing bases than they would be with somebody else hitting doubles, triples and home runs but not stealing bases?

If someone hits for power but doesn't steal bases, then opposing pitchers will pitch around said hitter and just walk him all the time and clog up the bases for the guys who can run.

I don't know about you but the last thing I want is clogged bases.

List of things I want:

1.) Cubs WS victory

2.) Lifetime of independent wealth

We appreciate your priorities; don't think it went unnoticed that you have Cubs WS victory ahead of lifetime of independent wealth. Now THAT'S Old Style  (can't believe I'm paying homage to that goofy ad campaign)
