Why is he still starting? We have Cedeno up who was tearing up AAA, so why not move Theriot back to 2nd and see what Cedeno can do? He cant be much worse than what Fontenot has been since the All Star Break.

These numbers are his numbers since the All Star Break and before todays 0-5 performance

.225 .319 .225 .544

Seriously, hes approaching a sub .500 OPS since the Break

Let Cedeno get his chance

I still think I'd rather keep Theriot at SS and try Ronny at 2B.

fontenot definitely projects as a better hitter than Cedeno. I wouldn't do that at all.

My opinion is that Fontenot is at least an average hitter for a second baseman. Let him play through his slump.

My opinion at this point is that Fontenot and Cedeno should both be bench players.

The lineup should be:

Against RHP:

Soriano

Theriot

Lee

Ramirez

Floyd/Murton (both getting a decent amount of at-bats)

DeRosa

Jones

Kendall (or Hill when Z pitches)

Pitcher

Against LHP:

Soriano

Theriot

Lee

Ramirez

DeRosa

Murton

Pagan

Kendall (or Hill when Z pitches)

Pitcher

Fontenot and Cedeno should get about equal at-bats off of the bench as the two backup middle infielders.

14 for his last 64 AB's is a pretty prolonged slump dont you think? Thats his numbers since July 1st

So which is closer to the real Mike Fontenot, the one who hit .400 basically for the month of June, or the one who is hitting .218 for the month of July?

Fontenot doesn't have an extra base hit in July.

He should never play against lefties.

The only time lately he has played against lefties was when DLee was on suspension isnt it?

Actually he's played pretty well the week before the last 3 days. I think someone is jumping the gun bigtime.

Hitting .218 for the month of July, and thats before todays 0-5. Thats in over 70 Abs., so it hasnt just been the last 3 days.

We let Theriot play through his slump back in June-ish, why not Fontenot?

He did? I remember Theriot being benched for a few games to "get his stroke back". Thats all Im saying, is its time to find the new "hot hand" because right now its not Fontenot. Let him sit for a few days, and see if Ronny can be the "hot hand" and ride it untill its over. It seems thats all we have been doing at 2nd and SS is riding those hot hands, and right now Fontenot is ice cold.

Well technically he's likely to be closer to a .525 OPS than a 1.100 OPS, but that doesn't mean that either one is really representative of the type of player he is. His PECOTA projection is .260/.336/.400, which seems pretty reasonable.

But, like I said, Cedeno had a .656 OPS at AAA this month, and that was in 85 ABs. Yet you're willing to give him a chance.

Well I just feel that the league has made their normal adjustments after seeing a player, and its time that Fontenot makes his, and so far he hasnt. I think he should sit for a few days, and see what you can get out of Ronny, and continue to play the hot hand.

It's interesting that the last couple of years Fontenot couldn't even get a 40-man roster spot and September callup, now he starts even when slumping. How quickly things can change.

Agreed, keep Riot as short.

Not a problem. He seems to be a tiny man for good.

His natural position...

Please refrain from making posts like this one. It is clearly a shot at a poster's opinion that you do not agree with, and therefore its out-of-place posting is trolling behavior. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

It wasn't long ago there were cries for Cedeno over Theriot who was slumping.

Cedeno has never shown he can hit ML pitching, Theriot and Fontenot have, keep Cedeno on the bench. I have not faith in him personally. I hope I'm wrong, but I think he's a AAAA player.

In the current rotation Fontenot is going to be more a bench player than a starter. With everyone healthy Floyd is the regular RF (with Murton and Pagan getting starts against most LH pitching) and DeRosa is the regular 2B. Fontenot would only be getting starts when DeRosa needs a day off or when Lou is compelled to start DeRosa in RF. This should be no more than a couple days a week total. I think that arrangement will keep Fontenot rested and at his most effective.

Well, Cedeno did have a stretch where he was tearing up ML pitching, similar to Fontenot.

Hmm, you are probably right. I forget so much when I'm away from Illinois and don't get to watch the Cubs as much.

Don't a lot of people say that Murton was struggling so badly because he wasn't getting to start more than 2 times a week?
