Rosenthal on XM radio just said the Cubs are no longer interested in Payton.

Thank you.

did he say anything else Cub-related??

Not really...lot of talk about the Dodgers, D-Backs, Padres...talk about having no clue why the Astros made that trade yesterday...a little bit about Dye, but not in relation to the Cubs.

Why do I get this feeling that "THE CUBS ARE IN SERIOUS TALKS FOR JAY PAYTON" actually equaled "The Cubs are scouting Jay Payton, along with every other available outfield bat"?

He did say that they were very serious about 2/3 weeks ago, but with Jones and Pagan playing pretty well they now see no reason to get someone like Jay Payton.

Rosenthal's column reiterates his xm comments.

The Cubs' interest in Orioles outfielder Jay Payton has cooled due to the revival of center fielder Jacque Jones since the All-Star break.

Angel Pagan is the Cubs' right-handed hitting option in center while Mark DeRosa plays right against left-handers, further reducing the need for Payton.

Great news, but even if Jacque Jones was ice cold, there would still be no need for Jay Payton. The 2 events are mutually exclusive. This organizaiton concerns me at times.

Any chances the interest decreased because they have a bigger name on the horizon? I'd imagine if a player like Griffey was close, they'd certainly drop all interest in a player like Jay Payton.

Yeah, I dont know if thats true or not, but I'm going to make myself believe it is so I don't actually have to face the fact that Hendry might just be content with jones :(

in hindsight, I think we can/should let up on JH now. As far as we can tell without over-speculating, he was just exploring his options and decided the Payton-option didn't fit.
