if no dunn or griffey, just trade for church and put him in center. an OF of soriano-church-murton is a really good OF in my opinion. It's not going to be the best defensive OF, but if murton is serviceable, then he should definitely get a shot in RF. Get what you can for jones and get church and his outrageous career OBP in the two hole.

Do you remember the last time Murton played right field in Wrigley?

I'd still rather have Dye if we can't get Griffey or Dunn.

As for this subject at hand, just say no to Jay Payton.

yeah i remember the last time murton played right in wrigley. i also remember the last couple of months that murton spent in Iowa playing RF. He was bad as a cub in RF, but from accounts that I have heard, he has been pretty good as a RF in Iowa. Assuming that Dunn/Griffey, is too expensive who else is a viable option to improve this team? Lofton and Wigginton would have been great, but they have been dealt for already and assuming there is no blockbuster this year, church is the best we can hope for.

Playing for Iowa is a little different than playing in the winds in Wrigley.

Color me confused and unimpressed. I mean, i could see this if it were sort of "garbage in-garbage out" move where we send Eyre or some other undesireable for him. I wouldn't mind having Payton around as a 4th or 5th OFer and PHer.

Are we saving Murt for a bigger trade? I hope so.

Who is he going to replace in the OF? I guess Murton or less likely Pagan. Not a big fan of this move jimbo.

Maybe Payton would replace Murton if/when Murton is packaged in another deal. I hope not, but if it can bring in a "real" bat it might be worth doing.

What role would he have on this team?

Stupid Jim Hendry.

I would guess that it would be the right handed option to Floyd in RF and/or Jones in CF. His splits against LH pitching look pretty good and the Cubs are definitely looking to improve in that area. I would say it wouldn't be too bad depending what they have to give up and how much salary Baltimore would take on.

I see Murton still isn't in the lineup, contrary to reports last night. While I wouldn't mind having Payton on this team, I think givig up Murton to give him up is a horrible idea. If they could get him for a mediocre prospect or two, I wouldn't mind seeing Soriano-Jones-Floyd against righties and Soriano-Payton-Murton against lefties. Essentially makie Payton the 4th OFer and Murton the primary PH/5th OFer. Edited by hankp101

Neither Payton or Murton is in the lineup for their respective teams today. Get ready for it...

Neither is Jacque.

Haven't read this whole thread but I hope there is nothing to this. I have a feeling if Hendry acquires Payton (or a Jeff Conine) it will be for Murton. I think they brought him up to make it appear to other teams they were getting a major league player in return instead of a minor leaguer. I've never been on the Murton die hard bandwagon but he has a lot more value than Jay Payton and/or Jeff Conine. Don't do it Jim.

I know this doesn't mean anything, but Payton is out of the lineup today. It'd better not be Murton for Payton, since Murton was a late scratch again I guess?

However, I just looked up the numbers, and Payton is 1-6 career vs. Wang while Gibbons is 6-18. HOPEFULLY, that's the only reason Payton is out.

Come on. There's no way Murton gets traded straight up for Payton. Payton is basically the RH version of Jacque Jones, and look how hard it's been trying to trade him. We basically had to agree to pay all his contract and get crap back in exchange, and even that didn't work. There's no way Hendry trades Murton straight up for Payton.

murton wasnt a late scratch today. He wasnt in the lineup at all today, "supposedly" he will start tomorrow

While I agree it would not make sense to do it we are talking about Jim Hendry...the guy who thought Cesar Izturis was a steal for Greg Maddux.

But wasn't he a late scratch yesterday because Floyd was going to take today off?

Okay, you're right, but still, I thought Murton was "supposed" to start today.

And I'm surprised a lot of you guys are giving Hendry that much credit. If he acquired Payton, I would not be surprised at all if it were Payton + Cash for Murton.

Yea he was. But Len gave some excuse for Lou as to why he wasnt starting, since Lou wanted to give Floyd and Jones a day off. He wanted to get another lefty in the lineup, but also keep DeRo in. So Fontenot(he of the sub .600 OPS since the All Star Break) got the start at 2nd with DeRo in right.

And Im not giving Hendry any credit, as it wouldnt surprise me at all if the trade you described happened.

Gotcha. I missed the first 3 innings, so I didn't hear the whole explanation. Like I said, Payton sitting isn't much to take stock in, but with all the rumors I thought I'd throw it out there.
