Hernandez gave up 2 runs in the 5th, but he still had a strong outing.

5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 6/1 K/BB

Only 2 hits for Peoria so they trail 2-0.

Veal having some control issues but not getting burned thus far.

3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5/3 K/BB

4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6/3 K/BB now for veal

dopirak homered for daytona (have trouble getting excited about this since his plate discipline is still atrocious)

I've given up on Dopirak. He needs to be removed from the 40-man. He's a non prospect in my opinion.

Anyone who hasn't given up in Dopirak is living in a fantasy world. Heck, I was even surprised to see that he had over 10 HR's on the season.

Oh and I think people should cut Dopirak some slack. He's been through a lot of adversity and is only 23 still. Not to mention he's got his power back and has a .356 OBP for the month of July. Let's hope he can continue to progress in Daytona and move up to Tenn sometime next year. Then he can hope to get called up some time in 2009 if he's lucky. At least he's no Ryan Harvey.

yeah his OBP is .356 mostly because his BABIP is .400. He's walked a little more 7.8% but his strikeout rate is still bad. I like the homers, but there's not much else to like about him as a prospect.

Whoops. That's what happens when I don't double check myself. Fixed.

Bonilla (8-6) yielded two runs on five hits and struck out five without walking a batter. Matt Wilhite hurled a perfect eighth and Jason Bulger fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save.

Matthew Brown clubbed a three-run homer, his 16th, in the fourth before Casey Smith and Gary Patchett lined RBI singles in the eighth for the Bees (55-53).

Cubs starter Cory Bailey (3-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out four in six innings.

Geovany Soto ripped a solo homer, his 16th, in the fourth and Anthony Richie lifted a sacrifice fly in the second for Iowa (59-49), which has lost three straight.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies Take The Opener At West Tenn, 3-1.

Tennessee scored three runs in the first five innings and held off a ninth inning uprising by West Tenn as the Smokies defeated the Diamond Jaxx 3-1 in game one of a five game series from Pringles Park.

Nate Spears hit his first home run in Double-A ball off Travis Chick in the third inning to give the Smokies a 1-0 lead. The Smokies scored two more runs in the fifth inning off Chick (4-3) on a run scoring single by Robinson Chirinos and a sacrifice fly by former Diamond Jaxx DH Casey McGehee. That gave Tennessee a 3-0 lead.

The Diamond Jaxx got a lead-off home run by Mike Wilson off James Henderson in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a 3-1 game. Rene Rivera drew a walk and pinch-runner Erick Monzon went to second on a single by Brent Johnson. Henderson was able to save the game for Donnie Veal (6-8) as he got Luis Valbuena to hit into a brilliantly turned 1-4-6-3 game ending double-play.

The Smokies will start Mike Nannini (0-0) afternoon while the Jaxx will counter with Doug Fister (3-8). Tennessee will be back at Smokies Park for a five game series with the Montgomery Biscuits starting on August 2nd. Tickets can be purchased by calling 286-2300 or online a smokiesbaseball.com

DaytonaCubs.com"]Cubs Derail Hammerheads, End Jupiter's Six-Game Win Streak

Santo and Thompson Duel in Jupiter

(JUPITER, FL) The Cubs have traditionally struggled away from the friendly confines of Jackie Robinson Ballpark, posting a record well under .500 on the road. But, Daytona figured out how to win on the road on Saturday night: quality starting pitching, a solid bullpen and timely hitting.

Joel Santo and Aaron Thompson were locked into a scoreless pitching duel for the first three innings. Santo allowed only three hits and two walks in three frames and Thompson was perfect. The Cubs broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth as Matt Camp reached on a throwing error, Jonathan Mota singled to send the speedy Camp to third and Steve Clevenger delivered an RBI groundout to give Daytona a 1-0 lead.

The Hammerheads would answer right back with a run of their own by way of the solo home run off the bat of Chris Coughlan to tie things up, 1-1.

Santo would last five and two thirds where he allowed one earned run on four base hits, walked three and fanned six. He gave way to lanky left hander Scott Koerber who tossed two and third scoreless, hitless innings.

Behind Koerber's brilliance the Cubs' bats began to thrive. In the top of the eighth inning, Jake Muyco and Camp came around to score on a two out single by Mota to advance the Cubs' lead to 3-1.

The top of the ninth brought on more runs as Brian Dopirak extended his hitting streak to 11 games on a two-run homer to dead center field to give the cubs a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Yusdel Tuero was called upon to close down the game and despite allowing a run off an RBI double by Andrew Jenkins, Tuero worked effectively enough to shut the book on Jupiter.

Clevenger and Camp's nine game hit streaks were halted on Saturday night but both had quality nights offensively. Clevenger drove in the first run of the game for the Cubs and Camp reached base and scored twice in the Daytona win.

The Cubs will play a rubber match against these same Hammerheads at Roger Dean Stadium Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm. The action can be heard live at milb.com or listened to on a tape delay on WELE 1380 AM after the Brickyard 400.

PeoriaChiefs.com"] Chiefs Fall 4-0 To Dayton

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs offense was kept off balance for the second straight night in a 4-0 loss to the visiting Dayton Dragons on Saturday night. The loss sends the Chiefs to 21-13 on the half and with a win by Quad Cities their first place lead shrinks to just a half game over the Swing.

Dayton broke a scoreless tie after two men were out in the fifth inning against Chiefs starter Robert Hernandez. Tony Esquer, Zack Cozart and Drew Stubbs picked up three straight two out singles to load the bases. Justin Turner drove a single into center field to score Esquer and Cozart to make it 2-0.

The Dragons tacked on two more runs again with two outs in the seventh inning off Chiefs reliever Michael Bartek. Cozart and Stubbs again got things started with back-to-back singles to start the inning. Logan Parker picked up an RBI single to score Cozart to make it 3-0 and Juan Francisco added another two out RBI to make it 4-0.

The Chiefs had a chance to get back into the game in the seventh inning after Derek Schermerhorn reached on an error to start the inning and Russ Canzler walked. Wellington Castillo smashed a ball at the third basemen that was caught and got Schermerhorn doubled off second base to stop the rally.

Peoria got a leadoff walk to Matt Canepa and an opposite field single by Schermerhorn to start the ninth inning against Dayton closer Ramon Geronimo. But, for the second time on the night the Chiefs hit into a double play when Canzler hit into a 6-4-3 twin killing to halt the ninth inning rally. Castillo grounded out moments later to end the game.

Hernandez suffered the tough luck loss with five innings of work while allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out a career high six batters and walked just one. Bartek surrendered two runs over two innings of work on four hits. Jayson Ruhlman tossed a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout while Alex Maestri worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Dayton starter Jamie Arneson held the Chiefs to just two hits over five shutout innings of work. He struck out five and walked a pair en route to picking up the win.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Henry Blanco © – Henry caught his longest game of his seven appearances in Peoria by catching the first eight innings. He went 1-for-3 at the plate and picked up the Chiefs first hit in the fourth inning. Blanco is hitting 5-for-15 with four RBI and one double in his seven games in Peoria. Oh yeah. A .400 BABIP means Dope's been pretty lucky lately.
