It's nice to see that the Cubs are not afraid to give the minor leagues a look at for more then just a September call up. I hope Fox comes up and puts a few out onto Waveland for Lou and Jim or better yet do a Glenallen Hill and put one onto the roof across the street. In past years it seems that the Cubs get that big name bat just as they are sliding down the hill of mediocrity.(hope I spelled that right, still not awake yet) Giving up the fine young talent that could have helped them for years to come and just not for the year that is now. Hopefully we see Pie again this year along with anyone else who can make a big splash for the Cubs!

As far as Pie coming, I hope Jones can con't to hit and stay in CF.

That or raise his trade value just enough before the deadline.

To do that, you would have to assume the Cubs were content with Pagan/Pie in CF, I just can't make that assumption.

There were content with it a few weeks back when he was nearly traded to the Marlins.

Free Felix plz, how long does he need to hit .400 at Iowa?

I wish that was the case, but if Pie was called up, what % of ABs do you think he would get between him, Jones, and Pagan in CF?

If Jones has a great 2nd half, then why not for us? As long as the Cubs Keep Pie for the future I don't mind riding the hot "VET" either. But I do like how Lou has built this team. Getting Jim to trade away Izturis because Theriot is doing so well and having a hot Cedeno waiting in the wings is just one in the many of good moves they have made so far this year.

I wonder if someone sat down with Jones and explained to him that there is no trade partner and if he continues playing like he has, his playing time will become even more limited and reduces the chances even more that a trade can be worked out?

It has seemed to me (and maybe it's only me) that Jones is the one who has been pushing to be traded moreso than the Cubs.

And I wonder if Jones playing as poorly as he has is a direct reflection of him wanting desperately to be traded? And I wonder if Jones has figured out that he's pretty much here and if he wants to play, he's going to have to produce?

Maybe I'm doing too much wondering, but a hot Jones could give this offense a lift.

I know, it's sad that we can't feel comfortable with him getting time even with crappy alternatives.

In all seriousness, until Jones cools off. Jones is hitting .357/.424/.464 in July. The Cubs aren't going to hand Pie the CF job back unless and until Jones cools off.

Jones in CF against RHP is not a crappy alternative.

longer than he hit .210 in Chicago

Random sample fluctations don't alone explain this difference. Obviously, they have something to do with it. But Pie now has a demonstrated trend of struggling at new level before mastering it.

Or an acquisition of Kenny Lofton.

You're telling me that all top-prospects don't move to the majors and immediately hit .300?

Moving back to the youth movement, I've been absolutely thrilled that the Cubs have been able to get production from the minor leagues this year. I'm thrilled that Cubs management has given them a chance rather than make stupid trades like giving up minor leaguers for Craig Counsell or some other hack that doesn't help the team.

Hill, Marshall, Guzman, Petrick, Marmol, Gallagher, Wuertz, Ohman, Fox, Pie, Fontenot, Theriot, Pagan, K. Hill, Soto and Cedeno is a lot of help. My apologies if I forgot anybody. There are probably others that could help as well, but let's hope that we get everyone healthy and keep this train a rollin'.

I was both encouraged and perplexed to hear Hendry say yesterday that he felt he had plenty of in-house options going forward, implying Murton and Pie but also specifically mentioning Cedeno and Patterson

and i'd have more patience for letting him struggle through his major league at-bats if we weren't in a division race with an automatic out at catcher and pitcher already

Oops. I forgot to include Murton. You can probably add Kroeger, Moore, McGehee, Piggy, Patterson and heck, I wouldn't have minded seeing Hoffpauir filling in for Lee for 5 games rather than Fox.

I'm not up to date on any injuries with these guys, but these are guys I wouldn't mind filling in when needed.

Agreed. If Jones can give us numbers like he did last year we would be getting very good production from CF. Truthfully, even if Jones is gone and Pie is our starting CF, I'm fine with that too.

In all seriousness, Jones wasn't hot when Pie was getting jerked in and out of the lineup, and up and down from the minors. To stick with the Cubs, you better be good quickly. If you take time to find your stride, you're out of luck.

Where did I say that they did?

In any event, thanks for making my point. Once you concede that it's quite likely that Pie (like most other young players) will struggle at the big league level for a while, then it's an entirely defensible move to stick with the veteran whose OPS is nearly .900 this month. At least for now.

Felix isn't an auto-out, especially if he gets platooned with Pagan. Use Jones' hot streak to ship him out(every little bit counts next year when we're signing A-Rod and Z) and let Pie claim what's his.
