Ward was trying to grab Pedro Feliz's infield popup in front of the pitcher's mound and converged with three other players. He fell as he tried to make the play and immediately was pulled from the game. His status is day to day.

Floyd, who has been battling shoulder and elbow problems, was pulled because of a sore neck.

We're going to be really short if Ward and Floyd both end up being day-to-day with Lee serving his suspension. I'm guessing we see Floyd hit the DL.

I thought I felt a slight earthquake today.

With the roster already short due to Lee's suspension, they simply can't afford to carry players who are "day-to-day" (unless they're at least able to pinch hit). You hate to put a player on the 15-day DL if they'll be unable to play for 2 or 3 days, but the Cubs may simply have no choice (especially if Ward and Floyd are both in that situation). If it's just one day they may be able to make do by bringing up a player just for tomorrow, delaying Dempster's return by one day, and living with an 11 man staff for a day, but beyond that I think they'd have to put at least one of them on the DL. Lee's dropping of the appeal and serving his suspension, which I thought made perfect sense at the time, now doesn't look so good in hindsight (especially since the reports that Lee would have missed 2 or 3 games anyway have since been refuted).

Is baseball discussions the right place for this? Just want to make sure I got it right.

Yep.

I say you DL Floyd. Keeping Ward day-to-day at least keeps someone who's first position is 1B on the roster, and it makes the decision of who to call up(Murton) that much easier. Plus from what I read it looked like a re-aggravation of Floyd's previous injury so it's probably the more severe of the two.

Plus Murton is really hot right now. Nice to get that hot streak here. Cedeno has cooled in the last week.

This seems like a perfect opportunity for Murton to come up and show that he belongs here.

I was thinking about that when I was driving home from work today. Hopefully Murt gets his shot.

Doubt that will happen. He had his shot earlier and didn't make the most of it. I think it's hard to get on Lou's good side when you don't perform when he gives a chance. Hopefully, he learned and will get another chance.

Looks like Ward could be put on the DL.

Chicago Sports.com[/url]"]Daryle Ward may be headed for the disabled list after suffering a strained right calf while diving for a Pedro Feliz pop-up that fell between him and pitcher Ted Lilly in the second inning of Thursday's 9-8 victory.

Ward was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for an MRI and his status won't be known until Friday. With Derrek Lee on the suspended list until Tuesday, the Cubs will have to make another call-up if Ward can't play this weekend.

Doesn't surprise me at all. If the Cubs were at full strength they could afford to go a day or so without a player in order to avoid putting him on the DL. With Lee serving his suspension, however, they've already lost that flexibility. If Ward and/or Floyd have to miss any time (even if just a day or two) they need to go on the DL so the spot can be filled. You can't play with what in effect is a 23-man roster, especially with 12 pitchers.

Levine was on ESPN Radio earlier and described Ward's injury as serious. Says he could be out for the rest of the season. If so, add another item to Hendry's shopping list.

I don't understand how he "seriously" injures himself while falling down trying to catch a popup. It's not like he overexerted himself. He basically just fell down like a wet noodle.

I don't really think it adds another item. He's the LH pinch hitter. We have lots of LH hitters right now with Fontenot, Floyd, and Jones.

If we go out and upgrade RF, then Floyd can take over that role.

He is a big boy, that is alot of momentum.

But seriously, losing Ward and his 8 RBI's this season will just "kill us". Not good news at all. Cancel the season folks.

If it is a serious injury to keep him out for the year then it has to be a tear. Since I didnt see the game did he pull up before the play?
