Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said conversations with Tribune Co. executives lead him to believe he still has payroll flexibility to make more deals before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

''We're going to keep plugging along and if there's another good deal that we can make before the deadline, we're going to try to do it,'' said Hendry, who would not comment on whether he would revisit trying to trade outfielder Jacque Jones.

I think a big deal will come. Griffey, Dunn....someone.

So do I. I just can't see the Cubs staying put right now.

I have a friend in Dallas Texas (not sure how the heck he'd have heard it or why their radio would care) who said that the local radio down there was indicating that the Cubs were working hard for Griffey...that the Reds asked for Pie and the Cubs countered with Jones and 3 other minor leaguers (not sure who those minor leaugers were)...take it for what its worth...

I think the Pie suggestion is pretty laughable....but Jones and some minor leaguers, depending on who they are, thats a doable trade.

How about just re-sign Z and go from there?

At this point I'd rather go for it this year. Even if it means signing Z after the season...

Z's comments make me believe that as long as we don't drag our feet too bad this offseason, we should have little problem re-signing him.

I have a gut feeling that we may end up with Dunn which is fine by me. And if nothing else, I have to believe Jacque will be shipped off to anywhere just because of the whole fiasco earlier in the year. With Dunn, we have enough offense and call back up Pie so that Dunn's defensive miscues in RF will be minimal and more importantly Soriano has his best friend back.

Where would Dunn play? I can't imagine him trying to play RF.

If we're going to go afer an injury-plagued RF, I'd prefer we take a look at Dye. He'll cost less in terms of talent, and is only signed through this season. If he can keep it up as he has since coming back from the DL, he'd be exciting to have on the team.

I just fear that Griffey would cost us pitching that will bite us in the butt for years in addition to the salary we'd have to potentially absorb.

He'd be a butcher out there, but imagine him in the middle of the lineup.

And Soriano (and Pie if recalled to start) would cover enough ground and play good enough defense to make up for Dunn's miscues.

i would like to believe that Soriano would be accomodating enough to move to CF or RF, but then again....

I wouldn't touch Soriano right now. Too late in the season to try to learn on the fly...

If you have seen Floyd in RF, Dunn would be no worse. Likely no better, but not worse either.

that was my idea at least, and like vance said, he'd be no worse than Floyd out there. Plug Theriot in at SS and call it a day:

Soriano

Theriot

Lee

Ramirez

Dunn

Derosa

Kendall

Pie

Switch Kendall and Theriot if (hopefully when) Kendall's OBP returns to his past few years.

670 is reporting the Cubs are very interested in Zach Greinke of the Royals....

That'd be a dream. Heck of a reclamation project.

PASS!

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he have mental issues?

EDIT: According to wikipedia he has some issues with social anxiety disorder.

Seems like too much of a long term reclamation project to be worth trading for when we're in it to win.

Depression. The right medication has helped it quite a bit, I believe.

Greinke's last month:

15.1ip 1sv 16k 2.35 era and .78 whip

He's a reliever now? I thought he a guy with ace potential at one point?

He still does, but the Royals are idiots.
